Conclusion
Mahato could indeed be a false favourite due to the combination of its long absence and the disappointing run on its second start. The market may be placing too much emphasis on the debut win, overlooking the uncertainties introduced by the time off and previous underperformance. Additionally, this is a novice stakes race, which often presents unpredictable outcomes.

Recommendation
Given the potential vulnerabilities of Mahato, laying the horse or seeking value in alternatives like Zip It Up or Kalik might be a more prudent approach. However, always keep in mind the nature of novice stakes, which are inherently unpredictable.

People that aren't clueless guessers doing a (half decent*) long-running, honest selection thread.

*Half decent = providing their reasoning, keeping an accurate running total P&L, a sense of humour, maybe a touch of self-deprecation or modesty now and then.

Did I mention keeping an honest running total P&L, as opposed to just coming back time after time with another failed effort but still posting with some horribly misplaced self confidence that implies they still think they are the New Messiah.

I appreciate that Betfair brought with it many new and much easier ways to turn a profit. Old fashioned pre-race betting is probably still the toughest way there is to grind out a profit, so kudos to GEORGE.B who seems to be the only remaining forumite capable of doing it (on a thread that meets the criteria I have described above).

5 mins before the off, however the result turns out ,I'd imagine even amongst clued up punters 90% wonder why they've bothered placing a bet before the off time, with their horse either far bigger than their bet, drifting like a barge that makes you believe your beat before its started, what we,d have called an old time slip punter who picks his horses from previous nights gazette, morning MSM newspaper,s must be new cannon fodder for bookmakers
watched 3 horses within mins the other day for whatever reason in my opinion were beat before the stalls openned
stoute,s horse in champagne / betting drift

I wasn't trying to imply it was easy, in fact I think I made it pretty clear that it's not!

I was saying however, that if all the "sharp minds" are on here, how come we only hear (repeatedly and in huge volume) from the ones that appear to be "blunt"?

I actually quite appreciate hearing the views of some people that I suspect are long-term losers - but they still put in the time and effort to explain their thinking or the angle that has led them to their conclusion.

I'd happily read a losing thread if it was insightful or thought provoking. I don't follow other peoples selections and I certainly don't follow any tipsters - but I enjoy reading their thought process and/or how they arrived at their conclusions.

All we seem to have left now (with a couple of exceptions) is clueless guessers that are too lazy or too ignorant to put any thought or any work into their posts. Apologies to the small handful that do.
Report Hayden September 17, 2024 2:37 PM BST
I'm as guilty as anyone of not putting up selections tbh , always prefer to post the criteria used and let people make their own minds up but no ide what category that's puts me under.

I always think the chances of anyone backing any of my selections as they'd all be double digits would be zero anyway and as for keeping a long term p/l on the same thread , can think of time far better spent.

Good luck today all    Happy

I was referring to the people that do put up selections threads Hayden.

As I pointed out (above) betting pre-race is probably the hardest way there is to make the exchange pay - yet we get hundreds of "selection" threads every week from people trying (and failing) versus just the one that is successful.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the only successful one, keeps it all on one thread, it appears to involve quite a lot of time and effort, keeps an honest running total and doesn't have an ego the size of Alaska.

Surely the point of putting up selections is to try and put up the winner? If that is the case why would all these wannabe heroes not keep all their picks on one thread and keep an honest running total P&L?

You don't have to answer that question - I think we all know the answer! - so why do they bother?

I don't mind hearing from losers, many of them have something worth hearing to say - but I'm bu99ered if I want to just hear their selections. Yet that is overwhelmingly what we get, day in, day out.

1tp - Successful in outcome or not, I'd rather read a well thought out paragraph with rationale for crabbing a shortie than some mug spouting to get on said shortie "because it won't get beat" or "it's there for all to see".

Maybe that's just me and the rest of the forum enjoys wading through a never ending list of unexplained selections that result in a massive level stakes loss?

Here's an example toptr

We all look at things differently and taking Ace's previous post on board , rather than put up or back something that's shown it can win by previous runs i'd rather look for something that doesn't look as if it can win based on what we've seen so far but may have " hidden talents " or be extremely unexposed or is starting its new career in handicaps or is significantly up or down in price or is cheeked/tongued for the first time or........i could go on for a few more.

If you take past performances as a criteria you're punting something that every man and his dog can see and the price will practically always reflect that but looking for something that so far hasn't proven it can win means a far bigger price and at the same time going against the losing public.

Not even looked at the 5.30 race so post is no reflection on Ace's selection and just a general view.

See , told you it was tedious and something 99.9% won't even bother reading after the first few words.   Happy
