King George-winning trainer Shark Hanlon has had his licence withdrawn for ten months and been fined €2,000 following an IHRB investigation into the incident that saw an exposed horse carcass being pulled in a trailer behind one of his branded lorries in June.

The IHRB referral panel concluded that Hanlon had been negligent in his supervision of the matter and sanctioned him under rule 272, which pertains to licensed individuals behaving in a manner that is prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct, or good reputation of the sport.

Hanlon has leave to apply for the final five months of the licence withdrawal to be suspended on the condition he adheres to a number of provisions as set out by the IHRB.

hopefully all the Irish expert pundits rally around him.

The tarp came loose. Would it have done if more attention was put on it eg a large piece of plastic (lining) used for outdoor pools.

It's only going to be 5 months. Don't know why they bother quoting the ten months.

It's not about the public not being able to cope with seeing a dead horse, it's about a trainer not doing his job properly. Clearly they didn't either believe his excuse, or think it was a reasonable one.

As an Irishman I think it is sad when we give in to the snowflakes in our society.I can remember back in the day when Colm Murray was the sports presenter on the RTE news -a horse had been killed in a handicap hurdle at Leopardstown.They showed the fall twice on the 9 o clock news and Colm said he was sorry for the horse and connections -that was the end of it.

Not a fan of people losing their reputations and livelihoods just because of a photo or video clip that has caused outrage online. It’s all we ever seem to get these days. Endless outrage, and knee jerk reactions.

Dead horses don't travel round unsecured/uncovered for a reason. Hanlon didn't do his job properly and consequently, has suffered the penalty. Nice bloke, or not, he was negligent.

Did he transport a dead horse in an open sided trailer? Yes
Was the horse intentionally visible? Possibly not at the outset but clearly later on (as per picture) this is not a large leap to make.

So the issue is simply should he get a ten month ban for not securing the tarp properly or otherwise not using a more suitable trailer. For what it's worth I have transported dead cattle before and I've never done it with an open trailer like the one in the picture. They've always been covered and had no need for tarp. He hasn't even put the mesh sides on! I've not checked but I'd be far from surprised if what he's done isn't illegal in the UK even if tarp in place. DEFRA and Animal Health would prosecute you 100%.

Smacks of complacency and a slap dash attitude. Use a proper trailer FFS!

From what I understand he tried to "cover up" what happened and a large part of the ban is down to that.

Yet he still thinks it's a good idea to go to Appeal.

The comparison with Mullins is a stupid one. To make that you would have to know Mullins had done similar and it's been ignored. Hanlon was suspended because he was negilgent. See the detailed post above from Joe which is much more relevant than this rant. It wouldn't have made it okay if it wasn't filmed. We should be thankful it was filmed, same with the likes of Dujardin, Todd and Elliott. As to who would be ofended at the sight of a dead animal being transported down their street, I would have thought any sane person. If nobody is offended why do think they are supposed to be covered? Yes, you can always find something worse, but it doesn't follow that you just turn a blind eye to something that isn't as bad. That's no defence at all.

Perhaps the comparison should have been with the Luke Comer jnr case, twelve months suspension for "numerous decomposed horse carcases on his land in 2021".

In that context Hanlon's ten months suspension seems very harsh?

Comer got a much larger fine but as the son of a bilionaire...

A ban is the absolute minimum for Comer and Hanlon both disregarding their responsible position as trainers and welfare of their charges even after death.

He made a mistake in not securing the tarp well enough. For that he loses his means of earning

a living for ten months. Of course the people who made the decision to ban him never make mistakes

They are perfect. If he wins his appeal, should those who convicted him then be banned for 10

months for the mistake they made?

This is all about so called 'public perception'. Just as here in the UK the racing authorities

are far more concerned about the reaction to such an incident than the harm ,if any, caused.

The person who should possibly be banned is the idiot that posted the photo on social media,

since his or her actions are far more likely to 'bring racing into disrepute' than Hanlon's.

I believe this had come about because his dad was caught with a misdemeanour deemed sufficiently serious to warrant a lengthy ban from the sport.

If a workman contravenes the rules of transporting waste, debris, etc, deemed to be detrimental to other road users in public that workman will be censured accordingly.

I think transporting a dead horse in full view of the public was sheer negligent, irresponsible, professionally incompetent, and bad taste. I think there could be other factors involved to warrant a suspension of 10 months.

There is no victim here. It's a misdemeanour yes and I accept most public would be turned off by seeing a dead animal in full view (as it's unusual for them), though one presumes in rural Ireland it's less of a factor (my family owns a farm in Ireland, seen plenty of deceased animals!). The heavy penalty is due to the reaction and not the action, some plank desperate for clicks posting on social media. In my view it warranted a suspended sentence (assuming first violation).
