------------------------------------------------------

The co-defendant of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch - who is currently missing in Italy - has died after being hit by a car.

Stephen Chamberlain, 52, was Mr Lynch's co-defendant in his US fraud trial in which both men were acquitted following the $11bn (£8.64bn) sale of the software giant Autonomy.

Mr Chamberlain died after being fatally struck by the vehicle while out running in Cambridgeshire on Saturday and his family has now paid tribute to him.

Mr Lynch and his daughter are currently missing after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

Mr Chamberlain's family described him as a "much loved husband, father, son, brother and friend".

"He was an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible," they added.

"He made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

"He will be deeply missed but forever in the hearts of his loved ones."

Mr Chamberlain died in hospital after the crash on the A1123 at Stretham in Cambridgeshire at about 10:10 BST on Saturday.

The driver of the car, a 49-year-old woman from Haddenham, remained at the scene and is assisting with enquiries.

Gary Lincenberg, Mr Chamberlain’s lawyer, also described his client as a "courageous man".

"Our dear client and friend Steve Chamberlain was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out running," he said.

"He was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity. We deeply miss him.

"Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family."

Mr Chamberlain was the former vice-president of finance at Autonomy.

Prior to his US trial he was the former chief operating officer of British cyber security company Darktrace.

A spokesperson for Darktrace said he was a "substantial contributor" to the team in its early years.

"Steve was much loved by his colleagues and leaves many friends at Darktrace," they added.

"We extend our deepest condolences to his wife and the rest of his family who are very much in our thoughts at this challenging time."

Mr Lynch similarly had connections to Cambridgeshire after studying Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge.

He was raised near Chelmsford in Essex and more recently has been living in the Loudham Hall estate in Suffolk.

Searches for those missing from the yacht off the coast of Sicily have resumed on Tuesday.

Six tourists - including Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter - remain missing from the yacht named Bayesian.

It was hit during intense storms in the early hours of Monday.

Morgan Stanley International Bank chairman, Jonathan Bloomer, and Clifford Chance lawyer, Chris Morvillo, are also among those missing.

The British tech tycoon made his riches by selling his company Autonomy to US computing giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011 for $11bn (£8.6bn).

But an intense legal battle following the high-profile acquisition loomed over Mr Lynch for over a decade.

He was acquitted in the US in June on multiple fraud charges, over which he had been facing two decades in jail.

Take it the cave divers are on site in case there are survivors trapped alive?

Very odd sinking in so much the sheer size and weight of sailboat although it's said it was sheltering from incoming storm so maybe closer in than would normally be. Mast failure alone won't be cause of sinking, like many accidents it's a build of of events culminating in disaster.

The water spout sounds crazy and would not like to even try and think about the forces present, a square foot of water weighs over sixty pounds.
Be surprised if the  wind  blew a 470 ton boat over.
But that's kind of what's being said, snapped  its mast and blew it over, crazy stuff if true, maybe the mast holed it but upper deck was aluminium, even if holed went down very quick.

Water depth being reported seem very deep for so close in, wonder what the anchor config was too, no mayday and no info if engines were running. No doubt we will find out in due course, sad event.
Report oneten August 20, 2024 7:27 PM BST
Breadnbutter, my understanding was the mast snapped but I think still attached to the boat so pulled it over sideways so the waterline was over the portholes causing the boat to take on water.

Report breadnbutter August 20, 2024 7:56 PM BST
Cheers oneten, not sure of the dynamics but once mast snaps the center of gravity would be much lower, the upper section is the lightest, would that be enough?

The mast failure defo played a part and why it failed will be center of attention, wonder how often the boat sailed, masts up, it had two 900+ hp engines and big fuel tanks.

Ais data showed it moving from its anchorage but was actually  on her side being blown, prob dragging anchor. mast never snapped that was the BS BBC report.
Captain saying they never seen it coming is odd.

These sort of  "yachts" are prob not really  designed to be blown 600yrds  on thar side, and keep water out, anchor details will be revealing and keel up can't of helped either.

Wonder how sharpish captain and crew were offski?

Report breadnbutter August 21, 2024 7:09 PM BST
All the crew got off by looks of it, once remaining body is found and investigators from UK have had a look at hull, windows, hatches ect it will be a fairly straight forward salvage op in only 50m of water.

As for the mast snapped report was prob someone who seen boat on side, prob seen lights too and thort it was upright with no mast.

Add in a bit of translation and you get BS.

The captain of the RBP deserves a mention, proper hero, Seems like the crew were hell of a lucky all to get in liferaft, wonder if they had life jackets on, same with dead chef, he made it out but never made lifeboat.

It's not as simple as that on this craft, they say due to humidity it's 24/7 aircon and that it makes no sense to keep anything open as it defeats the ac.
What I can garner is the story of Windows coming in came from owners rescued  wife but some saying she prob just heard glass breaking as that would be the starboard port windows deep in the hull which would be living quarters, they would be rather thick and strong.

If it transpires that ship wasn't ready for the storm, which again is unlikely as it was where it was to shelter but if it wasn't and everything was not ship shape, then what can you say?

That's unlikely but maybe there was an feeling of invincibility, but that's pure speculation and unfair, all will be revealed shortly, prelim report in a month.

still waiting on a  Boston Bridge collapse report, these things take time.
