The Racing Post have started printing a new style layout - SMART VIEW - in the betting shop editions

To say it is an abomination is putting it mildly

Every single person or member of staff who have commented on it say it is awful

It doesn't even show a Horses' form figures (???)

The layout and visual appeal are beyond bad

Whoever at the Racing Post deemed this to be a good idea is living in some digital, phone App fantasy land

The feedback surely is overwhelmingly terrible

Today a regular punter came in the shop to put his usual Lucky 15 on (and he's relatively young, so no dinosaur) and was walking around the shop bemused until he asked "where is the Leicester card" - to be pointed towards the NOT SMART VIEW on the wall - yes, its that bad, it blends into invisibility.

Dear me Racing Post, give your collective heads a wobble

I moaned when the sporting life stopped, didn’t like the post, but got used to it,
Same when they updated the web site.

There’s just too much info in the usual cards in shops, which they need to keep, but to attract new customers to bet on racing, they need a simpler version to ease them into it,then they can swap to main card once familiar with the form.

A lot of punters bet from the daily papers,

I don’t know why shops have never carried the racing pages from the sun ,mirror etc on the walls.maybe rights etc,

Strange really, that the post has monopoly on shop info, when maybe more punters use other papers to select their horses.
Given every shop, even independents use the post, which they should, has that’s the best ,full info.cant see why they ve never put the sun up etc aswell.

Thats my whole point

Have you even seen the state of what they are using?

It has NO FORM FIGURES! Its a bland set of boxes with no rhyme or reason

I invite anyone who has seen this race card layout to comment

The feedback and comments I have heard from both staff and punters is 100% disbelief

100% stevo. The card can barely be seen. And why are they just doing one card per day? It's useless and pointless and very worrying that someone "in charge" at the post sees nothing wrong. Yet ANOTHER thick human "in charge" making these decisions a child would not do.

So long as they don't extend it to online pages.

Useless you could not make a selection looking only at that.

Everybody in the baldy shop I use is moaning about it
I've been told if the "trial" goes well they will do the same for 2 meetings a day, and then who knows?

The sun is a £1 every day, main meetings colours and bigger cards everyday, 4 page pull out everyday, it’s over taken the post as main racing paper, who would have thought that a few years ago

All the punters in the shop I was in said, the page was completely useless and utter crap = No one could read it and no one could understand it.

The staff had put a notice on the paper:

We apologise for the lack of content in todays Racing Post beng shop
edition.
This is a trial organised by The Racing Post.
The page below is a replacement for the usual format of race cards and form.
There are the usual race cards and full form for this meeng printed in
The Racing Post tabloid edion which is elsewhere in this shop.
Unfortunately the removal of content by The Racing Post is beyond our
control.
If you wish to complain please write to the editor of the Racing Post;

They’re trying something new to attract newbies,so obviously regulars will moan about it,it’s not geared towards them.

Racing league the same.

Every new idea is always slated on here, cos it’s not aimed at people on here.

We all moaned about Sundays crap racing,so the racing league is better than nothing.just cos it’s not 6 group 1s people moan, there isn’t the horse population or prize money to have group races,so they’ve improved hcps.on a Sunday.

The posts quick card is the same.

Their target audience isn’t us,it’s newbies.
People have moaned about student days, again we ll go racing or bet no matter what,it’s about newbies.

They don’t need to keep us happy,we re going nowhere,so it’s about newbies,so people on here aren’t a good sample audience for reviews.

i have my bets all ready so if i do have to use the shops straight up to the counter put em an the money over and off out wi out looking at the cards on the wall but can sympathise wi those who do use em.  the game is hard enough without making it more difficult but may be a ploy to give the bookies  even more advantage over the punter. i e blind em with science!

Cricket has changed its approach (The Hundred etc) to try to attraact 'newbies'. BUT, in doing so it has peed off those who loved it already. A very sensible idea, I don't think!

As soon as marketing people are engaged, time, money and common sense are wasted.

On the whole marketing people are bluffers!!

And if anyone doubts this, read up on how Lord King at British Airways in the 1980's listened to his Concorde pilots instead of his know-it-all marketing people. Result was a hugely profitable Concorde service for the last 15 years of its time.

Racing needs to stop thinking marketeers are all important, starting with the RP!

The big struggle for racing is transferring. Newbies. Footy bettors. Stag do a crowd. Into betting on racing.
The hurdle is form reading. Far too complicated it just deters people. Hence this new simple card the post has produced.

Most punters who delve a little bit. Tend to read. Spotlight. Race card comments. Timeform comments.

The post need to bridge the gap from comments to full form.

Spotlight needs to do this. It does it a bit on some horses sometimes.

But the form. Needs simplying and explaining in 1 sentence.

Example.

The last 3 runs should appear under spotlight in a one sentence comment. Then maybe a general comment  after.

Spotlight
Horse A
. 3rd at 7 f last race. Ran on in similar grade but on different going than today. Been upped 2lb in weight
. 8th/12th at 6f   Seemed to be outpaced so has been upped in distance
. Won its last race last year at 6f. On same going as today. In same grade.
Then a general comment.

The more intriging punter may then start to look at the full form. Once he’s been guided through these first steps with an explaination
.

I'm not against change by any means, but whoever in management at the RP thought that dogs breakfast was even remotely acceptable needs to consider their position.

It is almost unreadable and hurts the eyes to even look at - with some of the tiniest fonts you will ever see in print.

But the concept of using blocks of coloured chunks is a Titanic of massive proportions - it all just melts into a blancmange of nothingness.

What?

First question - have you even seen it? Or you making a general observation?

I doubt if you have seen it, you'd be saying this

No one is against trying to attract 'newbies' - but even a new person in the shop would struggle to make head nor tail of that agglomerate of digital mishmash

I would argue that a 'newbie' could reasonably interpret a traditional layout in the RP - the new 'not-smart view'? I seriously doubt it

UPDATE

The RP seem to have come to their senses, and the atrocious smart view card hasn't been seen for the past few days, with regular cards for all meetings

I can only suppose there has been universal criticism

Lets hope they don't reappear

New low for the post yesterday.

Longchamp.
Basically just had the time of race in headline,no race name, conditions etc.

William hill on course bookies.

They ve took virtual racing to a new level.
Betting at hanover dosent exsist in the real world or the virtual world,so basically a.I card, all in your head.

So I played along, put 20 on one, then ten mins later they announced void race,so I give the staff a tenner,
Maximum shaming, drowning them with love hits harder.
