RIP. Decent pundit and likeable, unlike most.

Desperately sad news.

Had been missing from our screens for a while now, and his absence had been notable.

A fine gentleman, and always had time for a chat at the west country tracks.
BY FAR the best pundit on RACING TV, and he will be sadly missed.

R.I.P Jonathan

I can vouch that the tribute paid by Eddie Fremantle in that link above is genuine and heartfelt. Eddie had a message with the news at Salisbury yesterday, and had to go down to the furlong pole for half an hour to escape.

Jonathan appeared to have a bad a case of sciatica, as I'd mentioned on a thread here, but he was diagnosed as seriously ill in March. As Eddie was getting married the next month, and going on honeymoon, Jonathan kept the bad news to himself for several weeks, so as not to cast a pall over his mate's wedding. He also didn't want people enquiring about his health, which is why I didn't update the thread.

I'm just glad that I knew the man through the good years.

I am so sad about this. He was the only person who's view I would ask for on a race and what he was backing.  Always enjoyed discussing the merit of various horses and trips down memory lane about ex NH horses coming back pointing.
He will be sorely missed.
Pointing will never be the same, not seeing you there.
A top man, a gentleman and a true friend to racing who knew his onions.  RIP Jonathan.

Eddie F introduced me to Jonathan at Ponty around 2018 or 2019, possibly 2017.

He was paying his first visit to Ponty and had gone with Eddie, who had obviously been there many times already. We stood in the bar under the main grandstand for around an hour before, and during, the racing and had a real laugh about much in the modern world - basically, being three grumpy old men!! I found Jonathan easy company and, like Eddie and I, 'old school'.

That day has stuck in my mind, so very sad to see him pass away. No real age either. RIP Jonathan and condolences to his family and friends, especially Eddie who I know was very find of him.

Very sad news to me he was the best presenter of any Racing Channel on NH racing, would always listen to his wise words.Never forget on National day 209 he thought that Mon Mome had a good chance,so I had a few quid on here at 250/1,very good judge of a NH horse. On presenting and NH racing HE WAS THE MAN.

A decent one to actually listen too, I'd put him an Eddie F as the two I would listen too without immediately muting...very sad to hear about him, hope it was not too much suffering at a relatively young age to go.
Report loper June 13, 2024 2:34 PM BST
Unlike many on the Racing TV channels he wasn't there to further his broadcasting career.

His knowledge of NH and PtP was born of a genuine love of the codes. You could tell from his enthusiastic engagement that the more rustic the setting the more he enjoyed it.
