Reminiscing over old Channel 4 episodes got me thinking of other older racing programmes and I always enjoyed the BBC drama Trainer, as short lived as it was. I appreciate its a longshot but would anyone have a copy they could share?

Decided to have a binge on this series last night in between races at Bangor. After a slow start, I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. The bookie episode "Pilgrim Always Pays" was pretty good and the Gypsy racing episode had a excellent storyline. I remember the series getting absolutely panned when it came out especially by Claude Duval "Templegate" in the sun, so much so I never bothered to watch it back in the day...

It was greatly criticised at the time as I remember.

During lockdown , the other half went through about 7 series of Howard’s way,it was so intense she started to send off for Ken masters style clothing for me.anyway, there was quite a racing theme developed in that.one of the main characters had a leg in a horse,& her mate who she went racing with went through the card or had an acca up that sorted his business debts,an entertaining but fanciful scenario.can’t remember which course it was filmed at,may have been good wood

I'm on series 2 after starting to binge them and although aged and a bit far fetched at times it's definitely watchable. Skullduggery, gossip and adultery abound and that isn't far away from real life in the industry we all know so well.

Apparently the yard used for filming in the show is mentioned as being the top yard of Peter Cundell in Compton who is shown in the credits as being an advisor.

Yard now in the hands of Geoffrey Deacon. Thanks to the OP for the recommendation and somebody called Leedsguy for putting them on YouTube.

I enjoyed watching bbc big deal still worth a watch today to look back at how the local bookies once were Smokey filled and full of characters ….good theme tune as well …. At the age of 40 Londoner Robby Box has not done a day's work since leaving school. Instead, he makes a living playing poker and betting on horses and dogs

sevey -- iirc ITV's The Racing Game was based on some Dick Francis stories. I might have the box set somewhere though this episode guide does not ring any bells:-

Gerard Glaister is behind some of the greatest tv drama in British history and I'm not talking about Howards Way either. clearly he went out on a bad note with Trainer.  Also a war hero

Yeah if you click on the username that has posted the series and select videos you'll be able to navigate to different episodes. Ps I'm using YouTube on my mobile as I couldn't do it through the TV app.

Thks guys...found it via the leedsguy link.

Will look forward to the episode where in a fictional 2 horse race filmed at Goodwood, the betting on the bookie boards was shown as 11\10 BOTH runners at the same time!!! If only...

Whoever advised on the horse racing clearly did not know betting!! Indeed, before gambling became a bit of a social outcast (bar lottery and scratch cards, of course) I frequently saw film and TV drams get some aspect of betting wrong.

We actually saw an error in the first episode of trainer.

Where the soon-to-be-deposed trainer is doing his cash at roulette, the croupier allows the wheel to stop completely before retrieving the ball and spinning again. However, many, many years ago casinos realised that letting the wheel stop meant very astute observers could work out from the pace of the ball, and from where it was then released on the rim, the areas it was more likely to stop in. OK, it was never a huge edge but enough for the ever sharp casinos to remove it by instructing for the wheel to remain moving at all times.
