Read this very sad news when popped up on phone this morning from the Independent newspaper.
Only 2 comments were:
1 Jump racing is Animal abuse. It is shameful.
2 Refusing to run, throwing his rider and being cast in his stable? Poor bloody animal.

Doubt these morons even know what being Cast in stable means. These people take any opportunity to have a go at horse racing, ignorant b@stards.

now i is a bit fick but this seems to happen with some regularity

is there something wrong with stable design? are they too small? surely something is wrong and can be changed to lessen the chance of more accidents like this. i dunno but its very sad and fixable, is it not?

maybe im missing something

Had to google what cast meant in this context.

It's incredible how horses are so mighty yet so fragile.
Report mitolo April 29, 2024 1:55 PM BST
they are in-bred and over-bred and would not exist via natural selection. despite the advances in equine science and nutrition, fitness regimes, groovy new gallops and all sorts of medication horses have barely improved for about 100 years. all they do is become more fragile. how many have wind-ops? pumpkins never had a horse that can breathe. its unhealthy and they should be banned

the germans have it right. no horse thats been near any drug, or is infirm is allowed to breed there. hence their breeding industry is minute but their horses can win arcs on heavy ground, because they are strong and healthy, not inbred sprinting ponies

Unforgettable race the 2022 Clarence House I left haydock early to get home and watch the race without any distractions and wasn’t disappointed truly amazing race only the 2005 champion hurdle can compare with it as a spectacle this century.

I think impossible can be forgiven it’s not difficult to get the arkle and the champion chase mixed up.

Very sad news about a horse who gave so many so much pleasure.
Report Andrew.in.Sweden April 29, 2024 4:42 PM BST
Jimnast

Totally agree about the race, and unfortunately both horses were never 100% the same again, it took a lot of of both.

Altior v Cyrname was a similar type of race/outcome, also at Ascot, neither were the same again.
Report duffy April 29, 2024 4:42 PM BST
It does seem strange that the issue of being cast in their box can't be addressed somehow, we always hear the talk from trainers that they open up the stable door every morning hoping not to find anything untoward without realizing that they are probably quite literally referring to this issue.

It also doesn't bare thinking about as to how long the poor horse had been in there suffering before it was discoveredSad
Report Wesdag April 29, 2024 4:46 PM BST
I've got a feeling Frankel won't ever be cast in his box.
Report duffy April 29, 2024 5:10 PM BST
No, I don't either, but that is suggesting that something more could be done, but it obviously can't because relatively speaking Shishkin is a Frankel, he's jumping royalty, certainly within the Henderson yard he is and particularly with that trainer if there was more that could be done to protect horses it certainly would have been.
Report impossible123 April 29, 2024 5:16 PM BST
Sorry! I meant The Arkle (not Champion Chase). My attention to details esp horses are not what it used to be. I still remember the race vividly.

I still think he'd have won the King George; just was not to be. I hope Shishkin did not suffer too much post his accident. RIP Shishkin!
Report dambuster April 29, 2024 5:32 PM BST
Just goes to show , it doesn't only happen when jumping a fence.

Report 1st time poster April 29, 2024 5:37 PM BST
horses sleep whilst standing up,so for multi million £ horses especially on flat, breeding etc, wouldnt seem beyond the wit of man to engineer a comfortable restraint/cradle  of some sort ,which means they cant sit/lay on floor when horses are left unattended especially overnight

No, not suggesting neglect but more the point Frankel worth probably around £100m, I'd make sure he's watched 24/7.

Nevertheless, I'm surprised smart minds haven't come up with a solution.

Did it happen as he was getting up? If so, blooming unlucky. Oldies like me are finding it more and more difficult getting up unaided post sitting down on the floor without assistance eg holding onto a support.
Report duffy April 29, 2024 10:58 PM BST
imp,

Presumably when you and I struggle to get up we don't panic, the horse settles down too close to the sides and then can't get up because they are too close to the side and can't shuffle out to give themselves room and then panic and that's when they get injured.....something like that anywaySad

The older I become, the more I am convinced that some people and some animals are 'fated' in life.

They have great ability and talent but suffer outrageous swings of fortune along the way.

Shiskin must be a good example. Brilliant on his day, but refusing to race once, stumbling with the King George surely at his mercy, and now meeting he end in such a sad way.

Certainly not a dull life but one ended too soon.

Every morning I'll do a 5 min stretch in the bathroom before washing my face 2x and hair under the bathtub taps. The stretch involves touching my toes 10x (left/right) in quick succession; doing the Floss 10x; rocking forward and backward 10x; squating 10x; lifting my legs (4x) and turn 360 degree before swivelling my neck 5x left/right (will feel giddy if more).

I'll experience stiffness in my knees and hip when bending down if I did not do this stretch the entire day. I'd walk for several miles and over 1hr (no running) and carry 10kg of shopping. I'd try to do this at least 3x a week; park the car 1/2 to shops.

But, I can feel it's getting progressively more taxing each time. The joy of getting on/old.

Sad news indeed, my own take on Shishkin was he was unusual in do much as he appeared to  me to be tall and close coupled, always appeared to be a hell of a lot going on underneath, perhaps just a slightly diff stride pattern but to me a diff sort and could not figure out his correct trip, perhaps his quick stride pattern gave  him an ability to quicken, it was like he had a higher reving engine but it  took him a while to put it all together in a race,to me cut in the ground suited, he made two  decent horses look slow in the KG and would have won but for tripping himself (great spot Ruby W) up.
A great shame he wont get the chance go back to kempton and put it all together  altho the jury was still out on whether he was a GC hope, no reason why not, sadly we will never know.
A sad loss for all in racing, stable been through the ringer of late.

I remember 2/3 years before Covid I visited friends in Hackney. We walked from Homerton High Street (by Tesco) to the Olympic Stadium (West Ham) then thro' some parks, and back to Homerton High Street in the bright sunshine. And, I was not the slightest tired. It was baking too.

Now, I'd think twice before doing the same again.

I liked Shishkin more than I like Altior (I backed Buveur D'Air). I think he was impeded (by a faller) at the 2nd last hurdle and yet went on to chin Abacadabras. Sad loss!
