What stops him now?

With the obvious firepower at his disposal, it's in the bag. The only variable would be if he didn't try, which doesn't look to be the case.

I thought about it just prior to the Aintree meet. I think he was about 3/1, and about £500k down. And, given his firepower in The National plus his goodies in Gp1 races it would have been an astute bet. Nevertheless, he still needs to turn up or win a few next week esp at Ayr and Sandown.

I actually looked at it on the day that the cheltenham festival kicked off, impossible! was trading around 20s. One senses that the brains trust there have been considering it for a good while, and now he has banked the national, they will be very focused on it.

Report Hayden April 13, 2024 7:02 PM BST
Yes Cider someone said earlier when interviewed after the National he did mention the trainers championship without being prompted , which is obviously significant but pretty obvious now as well.

Amazing to think how many races he's won compared to PN   Happy
Report Cider April 13, 2024 7:07 PM BST
Definitely obvious, he was 9/4 to win the national today, which was a better price than this was trading. He had to win the national I felt. Now it's in the bag, I don't feel like the market reflects that he is almost certain to take it now (in my view).
Report impossible123 April 13, 2024 7:24 PM BST
I thought I heard 1/2 to win this now. Wow! 20's prior to Cheltenham. I remember he sent his battalion one year but came unstuck at Sandown. Then withdrew his charge (the fav) in the next, and went back to Ireland. But, he did give it a good go though.

Report Cider April 13, 2024 7:46 PM BST
The unthinkable is now not only thinkable but almost inevitable, as Willie Mullins looks set to conquer two nations in one season.

The 17-time champion trainer in Ireland is now 8-13 favourite (from 13-8) with Ladbrokes to emulate Vincent O'Brien exactly 70 years ago by becoming British champion trainer, as a second Grand National triumph with I Am Maximus saw him rocket to the top of the table by £52,807 from Dan Skelton.

The Mullins earnings in Britain now stand at £2,874,693 as he added the richest prize available in jump racing to the four Grade 1s already annexed at the meeting and the nine winners he had at the Cheltenham Festival last month.

Mullins mania has taken over the big festivals this spring and he now has his eyes on the smaller ones too. Merely minutes after I Am Maximus had crossed the line, he was already thinking ahead.
Report Cider April 13, 2024 7:48 PM BST
About 50k ahead of Skelton and 140k ahead of PN.

These entries are to lessen the chances of Nicholls and Skelton winning the races. If he keeps this up the white flag will be raised by the two English trainers. To my mind it seems wrong to determine who is champion trainer based solely on purses.

Mullins has 19 winners from 125 runners for a strike rate of 15%.

Nicholls 125 winners from 521 runners for a strike rate of 24 %.

It would be an interesting question put to the trainers themselves.

Also to find out if it's any easier to train a class 6 handicapper

than a group 1 type.
Report firstimevisor April 20, 2024 10:15 AM BST
Nicholls wouldnt have too many class 6 handicappers.

If Mullins has 5 runners in a Cheltenham grade 1 and has the first 5 home, the stats might say he had a 20% strike rate but would not be telling the full story

The adjective I would use is ruthless. It's counter intuitive, Willie is such an affable character in public, it's hard to believe that's fake. But there is a deeply intense clinical ruthless streak in the way the yard goes about its business. That's what this thread is about really, not selecting a 1.8 shot, anyone can do that. It was the juxtaposition between the market and Willie stating it was his objective was to win it. So, what was going to stop him...

Indeed. I admire the man, hates his bookie friendly double-talk. But, able to take that in my stride now ie I just do not back any of his charges with multiple entries except crowned champions.

I'm no friend of his owners herd-mentality either eg win at all costs including actions detrimental to horseracing and competition eg depriving other trainers of competition.

If he entered a few of his Division 2/3 horses at Perth, Chepstow, West Country , Ludlow , Aintree (choosing those as being easiest to get to from Closutton) every year and split up a few more of his good horses at Ascot, Cheltenham, Newbury outside the Festival (instead of having multiple entries in Ireland in Grade 2 and 3 races), you would think he would be nearly favourite to win it every year. Hard to see him having a poor Festival in the next 5 years or so. He may get a taste for it! For example, he would probably have one of the market leaders in the Challow even if he ran the top , top class horses at Leopardstown Xmas meeting.
