Outstanding effort imo.

Clearly taking tine off from sending pics of himself to teenagers, and seeking mental help, has done him the WORLD of good...

I couldn't care less about the poor rioters moaning about harsh treatment in sentencing - tough sh't for them.

However, I do wonder about anyone who commits the same crime as Edwards - will they get such lenient treatment or not? That's a far more important question...

Fecking mad world we live in. Sex offenders released to make way for 3year sentences for rioters acting menacingly towards police and 5year sentences for peaceful protesters. One of these released sex offenders assaulted a woman the same day ffs. Meanwhile Huw Edwards get six months suspended sentence for child abuse (and that's the impact that indecent images of children have on those young people who are made to appear in them).

Government has a great sense of proportion.

He says he made payments to convicted paedophile Alex Williams as an apparent "thank you" after he sent pornographic images but didn't purchase them in the traditional sense.

So he sends the pedo £1,500 but that wasn't for the photos he got Laugh

Not commenting on the sentence but I don't think anyone should underestimate the things you can do when in depressed state that you wouldn't do when mentally healthy.
Report Regbutler September 17, 2024 8:29 AM BST
Brian, agree with you on that, but nearly every solicitor claims that their client is, or was, suffering from some sort of mental health disorder
How is the judge or magistrates to know if it's true, or to what part it played in their actions?
Report Brian September 17, 2024 8:59 AM BST
Hi Reg, that is what a judge has to do, I think he accepted it in this case but I'm only making a general health point.

My own uneducated view was that the judge got the sentence correct in the way that these crimes are guidelined (only 20% of guilty persons go to jail) but that the guidelines or law should be tightened so that the expectation is that you will be jailed if convicted.
Report Regbutler September 17, 2024 9:09 AM BST

This is unreal. “ In his sentencing remarks, Paul Goldspring, the chief magistrate, said he had considered how Edwards had sought to explain his behaviour to psychiatrists by suggesting he had endured a difficult relationship with his “monstrous” father and had suffered low self-esteem after failing to get into Oxford and going to Cardiff University instead.”

Huw Edwards has revealed that he was rejected by Oxford University but said that it was the making of him as a successful journalist

September 2024

This created an "enduring cognitive dissonance and low self-esteem", which was "compounded by a sense of being inferior" by not getting into Oxford University and going to Cardiff instead and "being therefore something of an outsider at the BBC".

The sentence is extremely lenient for a case of this nature (border line paedophile) no doubt taking into account his former high public profile and his (then) mental health. Now, with his refusal (requests from The BBC) to return £200k, and negotiations on-going I think the lenient sentence ought to be referred back to the Court of Appeal for review.

But, apparently under current rules this cannot happen if a sentence has been handed down at a Magistrate's Court; only sentences handed down by Crown Courts can be looked at under the scheme.
