racing as a whole needs to rethink the whole watering policy. Years of overwatering is taking its toll.

Very strange for the course to be waterlogged in certain places.  Looks to me something similar to the Dundee FC football pitch.  Someone not doing their job properly.  I've never known Musselburgh to cancel at this time of year for saturated ground in all of the years I've been in Edinburgh. It's also a sand based soil so close to the Forth. It's not like there has been days and days of constant rain in the area over the past week

Not a lot anybody can do to lower the water table or stop rain falling, Muss is similar to Yarmouth and if memory serves they have only abandoned twice for the same issue. A contrast to last year when I came over and Fakenham was abandoned due to hard ground.

As has already been.mentioned, there's no doubt in my mind that this is intrinsically linked to artificially overwatering in dry spells. It shows you just how much they are putting on if Musselburgh with a links golf course next to it is becoming waterlogged.

The track and the BHA as a whole should be ashamed of themselves. They'll tell us it's all around safety grounds, there's no safer place on a Saturday for the horses than them being back in their stables.

This sport's is crumbling at an alarming rate before our very eyes.

You should also get yourself a Gorm Somerset, what effect does watering in the summer have on the water table months later after winter IYO?

When turf is artificially overwatered in the summer or when not required the thatch surface below it holds onto more water than it should or need, think of it like a sponge. The water table definitely rises over time and that means that unnatural natural rain causes abandonment that history dictates wouldn't have happened before. Add to that the fact that the roots of the grass naturally become shorter in length as they dont have to work harder to find water and that causes the surface to become loose and unstable.

I was a green keeper at some top golf courses when I left school so I think I know what I'm talking about.

Call me out by all means Somerset, the subject was done to death on here 15 or so years ago and in depth. The water table was simply reference to todays abandonment and that of the two occasions Yarmouth has abandoned in similar circumstances and being a very similar subsurface to Muss.

Nothing anyone can control in either case and no amount of summer watering a year previous had any effect.

Btw what is unnatural natural rain?

I think Ive offered some knowledge as to why tracks shouldnt overwater artificially. Todays abandonment at a track that physically and historically doesnt waterlog is therefore a strange one for me. I'm not here to be nasty to anybody so may I wish you a good Easter weekend.

Unreal amount of rain around my area all year so far. Just as it was beginning to dry out a bit, we had another 30 mm on Wednesday and quite a lot yesterday in sudden showers. Even this morning, the only passing cloud produced enough to wet the ground again. After tomorrow we are forecast rain every day until April 11 at least. No amount of drainage can deal with that on saturated grass.

Can’t remember Musselburgh being called off for heavy ground on the flat ……overwatered through time imv

Morning Reg, I meant good without any soft in the description. It might happen in April but I would not bet on it.

They very rarely water at Musselburgh Quixall, a point Somerset was correct about!!

Sand based…one of the best drainage in the land,something not right

How do you know they don’t water

The something not right is the water table Quixall, no matter the sand base it has nowhere to go and btw I did not say they do not water!!

ffs its rained almost every day in scotland for the last 9 months, the east might not have been that bad, but it has still been exceptional.

9 months of rain you should have told the COC
not talk of fixture been in danger,expected 4 to 15 mm during day yesterday ,expected course to take it no problems, they got zero rain before COC left course at 5 last night, racing on,no probs, bit of rain during night arrive at 7 , OFF

Kriskin, a lot of what you say makes sense but I am assured by a friend who lives locally that for some weeks now the ground/grass/turf everywhere around has had difficulty absorbing water.  Puddles and mini-lakes in fields are a common sight there at present.

Just spoke with my brother who lives about 30 miles north of Muss and he again confirmed the rain has been pretty constant in the region with a few of his fields under standing water. We were going to head north next week but he says that substantial snowfall has been forecast for the region!!

Dave1357 has it spot on regarding 9 months rain. The West of Scotland gets it worse too. A good card at Musselburgh as well.

The guy interviewed by pretty-boy Bell was gutted.  "A £100K hit" were his words.
