The state of the injured party is obviously of the most importance, but if they are waiting for someone else to arrive surely they should have an idea of how long that will take? What would have happened had the race started and someone was injured? Would they have stopped it? Seems a bit shambolic.
Report duffy March 23, 2024 2:26 PM GMT
Best to be proactive and abandon immediately, everyone knows where they are then, not hanging around not knowing what's going on.
Report 1st time poster March 23, 2024 2:28 PM GMT

Report sageform March 23, 2024 2:49 PM GMT
The only people who can be blamed are the BHA for making the rules and the racecourse for not having medical cover for the crowd as well as for the jockeys. I suspect that most courses would be in the same boat but surely the chance of a racegoer getting ill on a Saturday afternoon is quite high?
Report EastLower Gooner March 23, 2024 2:49 PM GMT
There should be a cut off like in cricket ie if the delay is this long we start cancelling overs and applying DLS (in this races) or if it is so long they call it all off.

People turned up from all over today to be at Newbury and a massive delay like this is going to affect them later on when they’re trying to get home.
Report sageform March 23, 2024 2:51 PM GMT
Surely you carry on until 20 minutes before sunset as per the rules. Those spectators on course are free to leave when they wish.
Report Baulkline March 23, 2024 2:52 PM GMT
Sounds like Newbury executives are penny pinching. If the race is off and something happens to the spectators
do they have to wait 10 minutes for a medic; providing none of the jockeys are injured. Must be a breach of H & S rules

Baby boomers - the most snowflakey generation to exist and they don't even know it - it's great! Everything laid on a plate for them their whole lives and in to retirement, sheeting on the generations to come with bafflingly generous pensions aaaaaaaaaand that still isn't good enough for them.
The country is a mess cos you lot left it in such a mess - even bigger than the mess you lot got us into when we had to 'join' Europe in the 70's. Never has a generation had so much and spunked so much leaving nowt for those to come - and that's without mentioning North Sea Oil.
Good luck  with your care in your old age, if you are in the north then you stand a chance of  being ok but in the south you will have to give all your savings to shyster care cos for appalling service - if you are lucky! And its a system your generation devised - well done.

Snowflakes are defined as people who easily get upset e.g over anxious, missing work by malingering with “modern day stress” , dont want to upset anyone even if they deserve it,, have to have equal numbers of cultures in every advert or drama, and love the BBC. That aint my generation and I am 74. Lived through rationing, poor education, low tech medical help, bread and dripping, 15% mortgages. ,back to back housing, petrol shortages, black outs, 3 day week, very few people owned cars in the 50's no central heating and I had outside toilets til I was 32.

I think it was the lack of communication that was sadly non existent, not sure about on course punters but the TV studio and stay at home punters were left for what seemed an age without any idea on what was happening. All what was needed as soon as the incident occurred was an announcement stating what had happened and when or not was the racing likely to resume. Not hard imo.

It was widely regarded as the fairest track in the country, flat and jumps and the favourite of many trainers and jockeys. It is far enough to drive from my home in Somerset but I made the effort many times until they changed the car parking and built houses over most of it. My earliest memory was Mill House beating Arkle in the Hennessy and one of the best was Buona Notte winning his first novice chase so a fitting link to John Haine, a childhood friend who was remembered in the first race yesterday. I had gone there with some fellow students from Reading and told them it was a certainty which it was but John decided to give the horse a schooling session for the first mile so was last turning in before cruising past the field and winning hard held. I was called a few names at half way by my mates who were not regular racegoers. Habitat winning the Lockinge under Ron Hutchinson is my favourite flat race of the old days. He was a 3yo maiden carrying about 7-12 and easily beat Jimmy Reppin, the Champion miler at the time. Fulke Johnson Houghton and Charles Engelhard.
