Terribly awful news to read that David Ashforth is struggling health wise.
Many of us on here will know David from his "The Sporting Life" column for his observations about the world of those racing, amongst other things, in his own unique and humorousl style.
Not forgetting his love and passion for Brighton races of course along with Ian Carnaby in tow.

"Just been diagnosed with bowel cancer to go with my prostrate cancer.
I think people should be restricted to one type of cancer at a time."

I'm pretty sure he did post on here at one stage, early 2000's if memory serves.

Best wishes to him and hope to see him on parade at Brighton this coming season.

His book, "Hitting The Turf", is a wonderful read.

Best wishes to him.

He was taking a keen interest by the parade ring yesterday and looking a picture of health. I think I saw him at Bath at the weekend too, by the bookstall.

Good to hear he is well and getting about at the races.

I liked his yearly winning challenge in the ring. IIRC it was at Xmas time.
Report 1st time poster September 18, 2024 1:37 PM BST
yes win a grand for Xmas documented daily in the post, I seem to remember lots of the winning and stakes were spent in various sweetie and ice cream stalls, it was a pour porrie of ew,spreads, facts, place pots, jackpots etc ,I think it was him living his   STEVE PALMER life for a week Laugh

I first noticed him when he did an article rubbishing John Gosden. As you can imagine that was many years ago. Probably the last time a journalist produced an honest opinion.

David shone like a beacon among the majority dreary dross of charlatan journos that shamelessly pose as punters' pals. Always entertaining, a pleasure to read, I wish David a speedy recovery and hopefully a return to the trade media to mark our cards.

my ice cream dripping on to my new tie coincided with my place only bet on the aways at Redcar finishing 4th and out of the placings etc,etc Laugh

I doubt very much if Mr Ashforth, excellent journalist that he is, wrote "prostrate" cancer!!
Report GLASGOWCALLING September 18, 2024 4:02 PM BST
Ashforth and Geofrey Barnard, both decent columns in the Sporting Life if I recall.

It's excellent news to hear he's still out and about.
Good on him.
