You never really know until they race in Britain. But how could you not be impressed by that. Although, I'd say the Irish have much better horses than HA.

Kilbeg king has a big handicap chase in him. Put him away now. Won’t even mind going for a Galway plate with him.
Always pleasing to see them ping round like that. Kilbeg king has a big handicap chase in him. Put him away now. Won’t even mind going for a Galway plate with him.
Can't see an owner like Kelvin Hughes selling one like that. Everyone has a price I suppose but he has had some good horses which never quite won the big ones.

Young trainer guy still a work in progress…man took the most round about way for saying he’s unlikely for Cheltenham and in the end he didn’t fully say no to it.

Good time, but not great. Using the Racing Post standard times, and assuming that the third horse in the opener (Es Perfecto) ran to its mark, then Il Est Francais gets a speed figure of 157.

Hewick a speed figure of 145. Probably tells the story of the race. The leaders went a bit too fast in the King George. Maybe sectionals will confirm that.

Don't get me wrong, 157 is a very good speed figure for a novice chaser, but it's more or less what you'd expect, with Il Est Francais having beaten a horse rated 151 (Hermes Allen) by 11 lengths. And with a horse rated just 135 three lengths back in third.
I'm just saying that rating the form through a time comparison with the King George alone might be a bit suspect. The big story from that comparison is really that the King George form might be iffy.

The King George was probably a bit below an average standard for the race but the last fence fall of Shishkin made it hard to read. If they had all stood up, Shishkin might well have held on from Bravemansgame with Hewick third or fourth. BMG lost at least 3 lengths from interference so would have beaten Allaho by that much with a clear run. Allaho was not impeded so might well have finished behind Hewick anyway.

Not sure about that, run the twp races side by side and for much of the race Il Est Francais was a long way ahead of the KG field despite looking like he was doing a half speed, it reduced a bit toward the end but that was only because the KG horses were racing and the French horse was only really asked to do anything approaching the last...if the KG field was going too quick then he really must be a monster.

Thanks for that, duffy. This is why I've never got involved with sectionals - half the time you seem to end up with something like this, which doesn't make sense to me,
I'll just leave it that Il Est Francais is clearly a tip-top novice chaser, but no more than that at this stage - he did only beat a 135-rated horse by 11 lengths.
The opening novices' handicap chase won by Blow Your Wad is very solid form on the clock.
And the clock also confirms that the form of the King George is full of holes, and its not a race that's going to work out at the highest level.
Thanks again for passing on the info from running the two races side-by-side.

Sectional are a complete waste of time unless comparisons on the day are calculated from the actual start in NH racing, where is when the clock starts? Stand to be corrected but viewing the starts some are on the tape others are 100 metres + behind.
That aside even averages are irrelevant given the differing way the races are run, imo the winner will never grace the hill at Cheltenham in a Gold Cup, maybe in a Champion Chase if he even got over the 3rd last the way he jumps?

His co-owner is desperate to win a Cheltenham Gold Cup. The horse will be there in 2025 all bring well. And as for his jumping, you don't get over some of the fences at Auteil if you're a sloppy jumper.

They don't jump them stront they can jump through the tops which is what they do, maybe 2025 you could be right but running like he did from the front, not a chance at Cheltenham in the GC. Would imo be like One Man approaching the 3rd last and then emptying before 2 out.
That though is just based on what I saw in France and yesterday so you and others may be right.

I compared the two races side by side starting from the point both fields reach the first fence which takes out any inconsistencies involving the start.
It was quite stark, particularly through the first half of the race, the KG field were jumping one fence and the French horse was halfway along to the next one.

From the first fence to the final fence fence, first time round, Il Est Francais led the King George field by 4.39 seconds. (22L) By the time they jumped 4 out, the King George field had reduced that deficit to 3.41 seconds (17L) At the winning line Il Est Francais was 5.43 seconds ahead of Hewick. (27L)

I've been a fan of II Est Francais for some time as mentioned on my own thread, without doubt the best 20f/24f novice chaser around at the moment.
I didn't think it was a particularly strong G1 field, but the way he did it, i doubt anything trained in GB would have beaten him. Now rated 160 by Timeform, the French Gold cup is a gimme and he will take some beating at Kempton next year. If he does get beaten, it will be by an Irish entry, but it's not a race they target so much these days.

Il Est Francais, described as another Kauto Star after his stunning win at Kempton on Boxing Day, will be a surprise name among the entries for the Turners Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival set to be revealed on Tuesday.

The owner had all but ruled out the festival this year having cited the french gold cup in May to be his main target before a tilt at the KG next xmas. Interesting

No finer sight than watching a front runner rattling around Kempton on Boxing Day at a fair old clip, lepping from fence to fence with the agility of an imperious stag. Hope he turns up.
