As for the SP bonuses, I'm thinking for a future comp I'd raise the thresholds a bit.

With regards the non-runners, the average score was 11.75 for the 5 races, just over 2 per race. You could give 2pts for a non-runner.

Just a suggestion regarding non runners UD, why not sub any for the next horse in the betting at or near the time of withdrawal for anyone who is too late to make a change themselves, if equal prices at that time, the lowest racecard number?

I think as the rules of the comp does not allow for duplicates/matching selections then the possibility of just putting someone on the FAV would not work (as your opponent may already have selected the horse that is FAV). Or am I missing something?

I would have thought the solution to the late non-runners would be for the favourite to be substituted, but if that was already picked by your oponent you go on to the 2nd favourite

There can always be tweaks on competitions but tbf those who chose first had the advantage today and well done to them, the disadvantage they had was possible non runners so swings and roundabouts in that respect.

I think China's 2pts per n/r is a fairly good and easily worked idea...we will all fall into the n/r trap eventually unless we are sitting at our computers all day.
I also agree with ud that there could be be a bigger scale of bonus points for longer prices to offer potential extra reward to those willing to look outside of the market leaders. Maybe something like zero for under 3/1, 1 for 4/1 to 13/2, 2 for 7/1 to 12/1 and 3pts for over 12/1?

I'd suggest that, in the event of a tied match, the player who picked first is the loser.
I think being given another horse by default just because yours doeasn't run is NOT the way forward.

Going first worked today DD but could be a huge disadvantage in future for those posting e.g Thursday if there was a surfeit of withdrawals due to ground etc, swings and roundabouts but the N/Rs situation is either leave as is or give the entrant the runner immediately next in the betting behind the other entrants pick?
I went 2 nd today and it never crossed my mind I was at a disadvantage
Fancied horses obliged jimnast, obvious first picks for many, second choice were left with the "field" but as said may all change later.
I think these competitions work best on a straight forward profit and loss. As it stands player one could get five Evens winners and get 25 points. Player two could get three 10/1 winners and get 21 points. Obviously with choosing competitive races like today you won’t get five short jollies, but it doesn’t tempt a player to find a horse any bigger than 6/1.

Yes someone can pick the forecast favourite for every race on Thursday if they so wish but they still have to win, and thats are more than likely giving an opportunity to opponents to pick all second favs with just as much chance of them winning (and more than likely getting better bonus points). And, of course, by the time Saturday comes the market can change considerably. The races UD picks could next weekend throw up all winners outside the market leaders. FFS if people want to pick all the favs on thursday then I say let them they'll come unstuck!!

I think there is a slight advantage to picking first as I would have picked Auguste and Dark Trooper if DeSSie hadn't beaten me to it and then I would have won, but..part of the skill is to get in early so he deserved to win.
I think winners should maybe score 6 or 7 points to have a slightly bigger differential between winners and placed horses but it's a minor point really.

in terms of nons i think the selection should go to fav as is normal in most racing arrangments, if thats gone go to second fav etc.

I agree with those that think picking first doesn't gives an advantage, at least not significant, although this could be considered a biased opinion in my case considering i did, but there were valid reasons for me posting early and i had a NR that i wasn't aware of until after the deadline.

Rico it was actually quite an exciting afternoon and got some adrenalin flowing (in my case) and probably for a few others so I don't think it was "meaningless" for the aged ones amongst us. You should enter the next one.

I can't believe how quickly UD provided the updated scores - well done UD in every respect.
I hated the format (scoring system), agree with kenbo - always like to see some reward for thinking outside of the box or big prices - but the optimum strategy (of this format) was to stick to the top end of the market. It is what it is, we all knew the format before we entered and could adapt our picks accordingly. Same applies to first pick - everybody had the chance to be first picker.
I enjoyed it, so many thanks again to UD.

It's equally obvious that it is an advantage to go first.
I gave the results earlier (a fact rather than an opinion) and if you posted first you were 20% more likely to progress to the next round. 20% is a large difference. It might not repeat, but that's what happened.
It is also a simple fact that if were picking second you had one less horse to pick from, and that runner was very likely to be fancied runner. Yes, they don't all win, but you would want to consider it. You wouldn't bet in a race where you couldn't consider the whole field.
It may be that nothing can realistically be done about it, but reading some of the stuff on here you would think people for some reason want to close down even talking about fairness. I am not sure what that sort of thinking achieves.

dd - if you think picking first is the optimum strategy (and tbf for the format it probably is slightly), just pick first. I might look at Saturdays racing on a Thursday and make a few notes for myself but i wouldn't want to pick any firm selections for Saturday on the preceding Thursday. Posting on Thursday would be a distinct disadvantage to me and the way I look at races but if I wanted to do it, I could have done.

I'm not asking for clever outsider finding to top a league of opponents, just find one to beat your single opponent.

undecided, I have read your comments posted yesterday. Whilst I respect entirely the amount of work you do in the forum, and that as instigator of any competition you have the right to set the rules, I am a bit confused as to your statements re the bonus points and non runners. I would assume that these statements relate to any future similar competitions, although from reading the comments it perhaps suggests that you are proposing these changes for the current competition. Surely regardless of the fact that I think that non-runners scoring nil points is not a fair outcome,and I also agree that the bonus points should reflect a higher SP level, I think that the rules as stated at the outset must continue for the remainder of this edition of the competition. Surely the rules at the start of any competition should not be changed during the competition if it is to have credibility.
Thanks again for all the work you do in running the various competitions on the forum, without them the forum would be even more dead than it is at the moment.

Aquarius, I'm not going to change the SP bonuses for this comp, but was/am considering the non-runner pts.
A bit worried about increased no. of non-runners as the weather turns.

As I am sure you are aware there was only one match that was affected by the non-runners and whilst I can totally accept the result, I would find it unacceptable if the rule was changed for future rounds, in spite of the fact that the change would in my opinion make it fairer. In normal circumstances I would probably have become aware of the non-runner in time to post an alternative selection but I was focusing on the Rugby on Saturday. At the end of the day the call is yours.
