There was a de facto 'lockdown" at the end of February 2020, where traffic disappeared and the streets were deserted. Then, after a couple of weeks, people realized that the risk to the vast majority was negligible. The downsides of locking yourself at home weren't remotely justifiable. So, people began enjoying life again, going to Cheltenham, etc.

And at that point Dominic Cummings got upset. He made a power grab, demanding a Chinese Communist Party-style lockdown, and got it.

The population avoided fresh air, sunshine and exercise, and started getting ill. But, once again, cases fell, and by July they were almost at zero. There was nothing for it. A mask mandate was imposed, vaccines were rolled out, and here we are now, with the vaccinated suffering interminable waves of Covid. Just look at poor old Regbutler earlier in this thread: three Covid vaccinations, and now on his third bout of Covid.

So, should nothing have been done? The only people qualified to make that decision are the people themselves. They did do something. Left to themselves, they behaved perfectly sensibly and cautiously in Feb. 2020, and only lifted their self-imposed lockdown in March, when they'd assessed the situation.

Should the government have done anything? NO! The government are a mixture of deluded idiots and power-hungry weirdos. The way the population so readily surrendered to them will depress me as long as I live.

Many years before I heard the view that if it was announced over a weekend that  a licence was required for walking on town centre pavements there would be long queues outside post offices Monday morning.

Once the medic advisers did a switcheroo, it was untenable for Johnson to resist. All our peers had triggered full lockdowns, there was incessant propaganda, images of deserted streets in Italy and men in the hospital corridors struggling to breath. A procession of coffins filmed driving along the street. Gvnt being blamed for every reported death. MPs most likely being flooded with emails demanding action and passing that pressure onto the executive. Johnson gets loads of flack and most of it deserved. But I feel like he did hold off for as long as was plausible, but they were all plotting against him. It became a sad, devastating inevitability.

The population seems to have lost touch with how death comes to people: they reach their eighties, they catch a bad cold, go into hospital, acquire pneumonia, and that's that. Covid was just another one of those respiratory illnesses, as proven by the average age of death with Covid: eighty-three.

They are the lucky ones. People have this fantasy of 'granddad' passing away in his sleep. Unfortunately, most deaths are not like that and are an accumulation of illnesses and the body essentially giving up. Anyone who makes it to their 80s has had a great innings, the greatest of any time in human history. And we do have the medical advancements to make most people reasonably comfortable in their last moments.

No PPE , ventilators , intensive care beds - hundreds dying everyday - the world taking action and Boris shrugs and comments "Carry on partying chaps , it's only old folks dying , death comes to everybody" - he would have been held responsible for every single death , and would have been out on his ear within days.

I really don't see how people over the age of 85 whose health makes them susceptible to a respiratory virus can have their deaths prevented. There are just too many cold and flu viruses out there.

Just study the appointments figures . Apart from  OAPs being  willing to risk it , they struggled to  even get a service for their existing ailments .
