Group 3 race at Leopardstown just jumped off with less than 100k matched in the win market, which as we all know is actually less than 50k. Dropping through the floor.

Only reason. Liquid is low
Report Barton Bank August 17, 2023 6:29 PM BST
To be honest Sparrow, if I wanted a bet in that race I would have been unable to have it without shortening the horse up. With that kind of liquidity and the market partially populated by bots it's impossible to get even a couple of hundred on for example.
Report Barton Bank August 17, 2023 6:30 PM BST
Not the only reason, Freddie. I would agree it is clearly a contributing factor but there is a clear decline in progress regardless of the number of meetings.

People are just not bothering betting on this garbage  but every other excuse under the sun is trotted out unfortunately.

3 meetings this eve last year, no Windsor/ Racing League which admittedly will have had an impact this year...

Betfair effectively closing the accounts of many of their regular customers surely the biggest factor.

Why do you describe tonights racing as garbage?  People spend thousands every year to keep these horses in training because of their love of the game which enables to keep thousands of others in employment.  Or does none of that matter?

Sparrow there's much more people can bet on these days. The days of people betting for the sake of it on the horses is long gone, particularly the daily rubbish flat meetings. Even the big meetings are generally a letdown. People just aren't bothered anymore, but let's keep kidding ourselves it's only down to account blocks or not being able to spend as much as you like. A girl I know who works in a Spoils shot told me they take more on the roulette than the horses, that's how bad its gone.

To bet horses on the exchange first and foremost you would be a racing fan, the racing fan is an aging dying breed,. What existed when most of us was growing up doesn't exist anymore all of our elders that influenced us were probably racing fans that frequented bookmakers shops jammed packed everyday.

Youngsters these days aren't racing lovers like us and with a multitude of other sports to bet on via the internet it stands to reason that racing would suffer. Even without the P.C. charge and all the other things that gets blamed the exchange would still be in decline because the people who are interested in racing are a dying breed, the average age of someone betting horses on the exchange would probably be somewhere in the 40's.

Racing has an aging fanbase and it is dying across the board, why then are we scratching our head that a niche corner of it is dying also?
Report sparrow August 17, 2023 8:28 PM BST
As I understand it and correct me if I'm wrong but the courses, bookmakers and others are all making profits. If this is incorrect tell me which businesses in your view are about to close?

Would agree that racing fans and bettors are an aging dying breed.

That’s why closing the accounts or stopping the ones that are still around from betting on it as they wish is such a dangerous thing. Candle is being burnt from both ends. Maybe it is just speeding up the inevitable, but racing will be dead within years if they carry on culling accounts at the rate that they are.
Report G Hall August 17, 2023 11:31 PM BST
Correct me if I'm wrong, but back in the 80/90's, most betting was on racing, but not everyone was betting imo, but nowadays, or at least very recently, everyone seems to be betting.

The pub a match is on everyone betting or so it seems.

The Bookies have been working hard for the last decade to steer punters ( younger ones in Particular ) away from Horse & Greyhound Racing in case they might know something and switch them to Cartoon Racing/Roulette where theyve zero chance of winning short term or long term , Bookies will tolerate football as a half way house as long you dont show a profit with your betting.
Also its preferable you will do your cartoon racing/roulette/football betting on your phone at home so they can close shops as well and make even more money for shareholders.

How do you know what is actually at risk on any race ? - a handful of long gone ping pong traders would have boosted the older matched number substantially ....
Report Barton Bank August 18, 2023 3:19 PM BST
You don't, but the amount traded is surely the best available guide. Any evidence that just as big a share of the current markets isn't "ping pong traders"?
Report Johnny The Guesser August 18, 2023 6:10 PM BST
Multiple possibilities - maybe the ecosystem just evolves (much like the online poker world did) - people/traders  get smarter , mug money is not replaced, profits therefore drop and even the clever ping pong traders realise they can use their skills to make even more money away from the exchange.
