Ruined the whole race, lets face it who wants to watch the Derby at 1.30pm,the general public will probably still be out shopping or having lunch. These so called planners must have known that the FA Cup final was on today. They probably would ask some furniture to be delivered knowing they are on going on holiday, just like the rest of controllers of British Horse Racing they havent got a clue.

The big stables and big owners Coolmore, Godolphin, Johnny G etc, should threaten to boycott the race next year, until discussions are held to elevate the race show that it once again becomes a showpiece of the British sporting calendar.

The irony is that the fa cup used to be a showpiece of the British sporting calendar. Nowadays I couldn't even tell you who was playing in the final in any given year.

It's true that most of the showpiece sports events have lost their historical standout status these days - partly due to blanket sport being so available 24/7 though I reckon.

Yes it's a different world, mainly due to internet access, globalisation and availability of information.
the boat race, the open, the derby, the fa cup, the British grand prix, five nations et al were signposts of my sporting year.
all changed now.
RA, Cheltenham and Aintree have all held up pretty well. it's the classics that appear to have diminished in horse racing terms for some reason.

Hardly had time to get a paper, look at the runners and have a bet, didn't seem like The Derby at all, just as bas as running the GN at 5.15, clueless people making these decisions, f@ck the football, there's Cup finals every other week, and the 2 finalists don't really give a toss about the cup, but there's only one Epsom Derby.

DECLINISM has affected both of the big sporting events today, both were enormous all the way through into the 80s. But at least the FA Cup is not sponsored by BetThread. It's a differnet world now. I agree Cheltenham Festival seems as big or even bigger than it ever was, the marketers have done a superb job down there.

If the Aston Martin brand are happy to associate with racing and sponsor races on the day, it's a bit odd that they can't or won't sponsor the major race. I realise there's a (very) loose association with speed in the dashes, but it's a pity they can't get more aspirational branding for the blue ribband.
