Most years still a great race, but in recent years the winner is often not a great horse. Used to go regularly but not been since lockdown and can't drum up any enthusiasm with the group of us that had been going previous 10 years. The main stand just getting too crowded and the picnic package almost doubled in price unless accepting a compromised view. The loss of the Coronation Cup to Oaks day had made it a less appealing day from a betting pov.

Have the Coolmore boys & Godolphin reduced the status of it?
Coolmore running mob handed rubbish and not running their Guineas winners in it. (Saxon Warrior & Camelot excluded) And then when they do win it they geld him!

Undoubtedly AOB and co have played a big part in reducing the status of the race, often winning with horses hardly heard of previously.Ruler Of The World,Wings Of Eagles and Serpentine spring readily to mind. And Anthony van **** was hardly any better. Also, what those four achieved subsequently bears me out.

I think back to the day some idiot shoved a microphone into McCoy's face stating Synchronised maybe wouldn't go down as the greatest Gold Cup winner , to which he replied " Who cares "

Partly caused by the best 3yos not running so many times by early June so harder to judge them. It is also the case that when there is no apparent standout, many of us assume that they are a moderate bunch. If one wins by 10 lengths we might think differently.

Breeders have wrecked it imo. Most of them run a mile from a horse that has won over 12f. Galileo the obvious exception Most derby winners now end up as NH sires.

No it was probably a good one. The first 2 in the Dante were third and fifth and the first two today beat them a long way. I can only assume that those who denigrate the race every year need to see a horse win 6 races before they can accept that it is much good. The Guineas and Derby are contested by horses that are barely 3yo and many will have only raced 3 or 4 times so they are hardly household names until today. We will have to wait until at least July to find out how they compare with the older generation. Could we see Emily Upjohn, Westover, Soul Sister and August Rodin in the King George? Emily seems more likely to contest the Eclipse but I would love to see them all in the KG.

So how does that hold true if the Dante turns out to be rubbish? Auguste Rodin bombed in the Guineas, and the second bombed in what was likely a very weak Futurity. In recent years those who have cast doubt over the Derby have been far nearer the mark than the cheerleaders. What's happened to the french presence? One winner since 1976, and that was owned by 'the lads'. Similarly, only one Oaks winner. Are they just no good, or do they prefer not travelling, and the shorter trip? There was a time when they would regularly challenge for our better races, but that spirit of adventure looks to have gone forever.
The Flat game badly needs some stars whether they are 3yo's or older horses.

AOB and Coolmore reduced the prestige of the race years ago, whether this one turns out to be decent remains to be seen, only two horses that can make it so,the winner and 2nd? Where does the winner go....+ 2f or minus 2f iyo? I doubt he would have the speed for 10f against proper class horses at the trip,up 2f I see no issue!!!
Can't see the "Classic" crop proving superior to decent years based on today at 12f,can you?

australia, high chapparal and galileo only 3 of his derby winners i would describe as great colts , personally i believe yesterdays winner will be with the other 5, ps Camelots derby field was probably the worst imo

I would be surprised if the Dante was rubbish. It was thought at the time it was run to be a strong and open race and so it proved although luck in running affected the outcome. White Birch was slow away at York so turning the form round with The Foxes was not a big surprise and he had a better run through the race yesterday than The Foxes so there is still very little between them. Sprewell won a good trial in Ireland. The first two were clear of those three so imo they were very good on the day. The experience of running in a Derby can improve or ruin a horse so we need to be cautious in drawing any conclusions until later in the year.

I can't agree with much of this. A very decent Derby for me with two who I feel sure will prove to be very good horses filling the places. As for the Derby being a great race, in my opinion it lost that profile many years ago. Some exceptionally moderate horses now overfill the entries.

Ace Impact was very impressive on Sunday and looked capable of staying further. A line through Epictetus and The Foxes make Ace Impact and August Rodin within a pound of each other adding more interest to the season ahead.
