It was not a great ride. He also gave away a place on Walking on Air when beaten for a gap going to the last. Agree about the winner, I am getting very hopeful of A Plus Tard now.

steve completely gone with his stalking. I hope things get better with his mental health. They usually do if he gets some back up. That aside, he detests winners.

in all truth even when siskin looked unbeatable he usually needed a bit of pushing along early in his races then went on to travel better the further they went, big difference now is whisking jumping is not really top class. (clearly jumping cost it the race today) he wasn't closer up cos he couldn't lay up or horse may just be becoming a bit tricky.al that said with a clear round of jumping he deffo have won

The slow start was a factor and was nico over racing him to get a position, i dont know but I have not seen Shishkin make that many mistakes in a race.

Horse barely went a yard today. But he's been like that in 3 of his last 4 races. Maybe he's no longer right. Or maybe he wants a flattish track (at least not an upsy-downsy one like Cheltenham or Sandown). Maybe he also wants 3 miles - they went off at a good pace there and that seemed to unsettle him.

The issue is why a horse who is bred for 3m+ , has ran like he needs 3m plus, has only just been stepped up to 2m 4f when he is 9 years old. No 10 year old has won the gold cup for 30 years and Henderson now taking of stepping him up to 3m. He was finally fit and they have completely missed the opportunity of winning the Gold Cup . Feel sorry for the horse that his programme over the last 3 years has been so pathetically mapped out.

Looking at his total book of rides this week, I am not really a fan. Very weak on Walking on Air and got left on Minella Indo. Mind you, apart from CH. Nicky has a very weak hand this season.

I just think Shishkin did not enjoy being in among horses, that was the biggest chase field he had run against he is used to being prominent against 4-6 runners.

He got £79,500 for coming second. Whether without the blunder he would have got to the winner is not certain.
Is he taking him to Liverpool? He’ll be interesting if he does.

Read on here he's going to the Bowl at Aintree. HdB also thinking about it for A Plus Tard. Could be an interesting race, especially if Nicholls has got something for it too.

Shiskin is a faster ground horse he struggles to travel on slow ground. There is often a race that pushes a horse to it’s limit after which they are not the same again.
Coneygree the Gold Cup Shiskin the Tingle Creek really hard race to beat Energumene Edwardstone being bottomed in January trying to catch Editeur Du Gite
The weaknesses they could previously overcome come to the surface mentally more after a tougher than tough run.

Yes, a hard race bottoming a horse is quite common. Altior at Ascot was another. I think one of the things that defines the really great horses is that they can come back from such races and do it again and again (e.g. Desert Orchid, Kauto Star).
Incidentally, Shiskin/Energumene was the Clarence House Chase, not the Tingle Creek.

This hard race stuff needs some understanding. So Shiskin had a hard race which has finished him, but the second Energumene, had just as hard a race but won its next three races.
I get it now.

All the hype about Galopin Des Champs winning 2 or three Gold Cups is remarkably similar to what we thought and read about A Plus Tard last year. GDC might become a multiple Gold Cup winner but history tells us that he probably won't. Bravemansgame also had the hardest race of his life so we can only hope that he recovers from it.

At some point any horse is going to be past its best. It can show in several ways. In Shiskin's case it was that race against Emnergumene where he was getting beaten for speed all up the straight, until after the last where the eventual second called enough.
I'd say Shiskin isn't as good as it was. But that's not to say it can't win big races at the moment. Shiskin is a nine year old, so it's reasonable to expect his best days are behind him now. As with the majority of horses when they reach that age. But as you strontiun says ‘’they’re not all the same.’’
