I only lay when I think something cant win.

Doing ok, fairly big bank now, all go through hard times.

Has to be important to split your bank to lose 10% max imo with your mega giga LAY.

Even the best will go on a losing streak.

But if you lose 10 x 10% you probs shouldnt bother.

Also pick out your lays prior to the days racing, you cant win on the conveyer belt, thats why they set up 4 billion races a day, to extract your cash.

Cant win X amount of times out of a 100 imo that was supposed to read*
Prefer to get value than actually say what will or wont win.

I was talking to my barber who told me he turned 200 into 3000 in a few weeks but then lost the lot on one bad Saturday, he ended up laying three in a race.
When you tell people that it is near impossible for most people to win long term by backing horses to lose they don't understand.

Just my thoughts over the years. If you do Lay be Very selective. I particularly like laying short priced Favs who drift a few mins before the off. But again be Very Selective.  Cheers
Report Trident May 18, 2022 12:16 PM BST
There are a few trainers who I wont mention on here, when laying when they drift has been profitable.

interesting spreadsheet happysandwich ,but what does the "no bets "column mean ?
Report ProSniper May 18, 2022 12:26 PM BST
RULES
1.  Lay any horse that’s latest form is 21 at odds no bigger than BFSP 6.00 (5/1)
2.  Anything bigger than BFSP 6.00 – NO BET
3.  Two or more horses running in the same race – NO BET
4.  Lay to win a fixed amount e.g. £10
Report snowynoon May 18, 2022 12:47 PM BST
ok thanks ,prosniper.

£20 to £1,000 and later £20 to £460
Just LAYING Tony McCoy mounts 2004/5 and 2005/6

He was like an ISA

Tried the same with Ryan Moore later but he rode plenty of 33/1 shots (never got caught)
but it was no fun. £20 to £80

ProSniper,

Thanks for clarifying snowynoon’s question.

snowynoon,

Probably keep any other questions you may have on my thread.
It all helps to create a bit of interest and banter.

Starting a lay strategy with a small bank is not ideal. You are sure to get some lays that win if you are unlucky enough to get that poor patch at the beginning of your ploy, then it's curtains.

My grandfather was a bookies's agent (illegal) in pre betting shop days. He told me that he decided to act as bookmaker having seen his customers lose regularly. On the first Saturday of his go-alone plan, the favourites all come in across the card on the first race (race meetings then all started on the hour or quarter past) and this was a popular doules and trebles bet (that was still the case when I was settling in betting shops in late 60s). My grandfather obviously started with an insufficient bank and was cleaned out, fortunately the bookmaker allowed him to return to his previous job.

Done it many times but difficulty is the last part of the OP - keeping hold of it when the inevitable 'horror day' lands on your plate when laying.

I've laid about 4 winners in a row, none of them shorties, on those worst days.
Report happysandwich May 18, 2022 3:45 PM BST
stu,

Thats why I have a BFSP limit of 6.00.

I've had 4 losers this week but I now have a pot of £515.04 = 51.5 pts

You can follow the progress here.

ItsMeSwaddle:

"I only lay when I think something cant win."

but later

"Prefer to get value than actually say what will or wont win."

Which is it?  The latter (value) makes sense to me (as it does backing) the former feels like picking winners in reverse?

Sorry my bad was p' ed up

Look next day and cringe.

What I actually meant was laying in play I prefer to just take the angle that cant possibly win, ofc get the odd one that trips me up but you cant trade value in these dire liquid markets imo

Pre race surely you have to take the value approach to have any success?

Are you having a nice day today?
Report longbridge May 19, 2022 4:31 PM BST
I'd argue both pre- and in- running you need to take value, though if in-running the horse really cannot win then any price laid is value.

I am having a very good day thank you - the arrival of sunshine and decent weather has predictably lfted my spirits.  Thanks for asking; I trust the same is true of you?
Report Trident May 20, 2022 9:45 AM BST
Be Very careful laying in running at Haydock today. Over the years your be surprised how the track catches the in running players out!... Very difficult track particularly if Soft to Heavy ground!
