I think my self-esteem might have been one of the 400 documents that Unibet demanded before they would allow me to withdraw. You've got more chance of sha99ing the queen mother than you have of getting a bet on with those shysters.

To collect/withdraw you will need to provide documents with the combined same weight as 781 paper copies of the racing post. I think even that Tobymug character regretted saying that some of his pretend bets/prices were with them! Blush

For the bets they want to take, they are the same price as all the other shysters masquerading as bookmakers:

i.e. Black is Evens and so is Red!

sparrow - my bets with them (and their ilk) were in the golden age of on-line betting (probably more than 15 years ago now). The fact that they are still going and are still licensed and that they now have about a dozen other brands pretending to be bookmakers (so that they can promote and cross-sell addictive slots and casino games to addicts) is testament to the state of regulation in the UK!

With regard to their actual business model (the grooming of addicts) - You can google if you want to see a list of their misdemeanours and law breaking. Taking bets on real events, especially horse racing is not on their agenda and the RP and their revered tipping team would be well aware of that.
Report The Management April 24, 2022 11:48 AM BST
In a nutshell - A more cynical person would have to wonder why the gallant Sir Tom and his employer the Racing Post would be directing their racing fan readers in the direction of a business that doesn't take bets on horses!

Report tyred April 24, 2022 12:05 PM BST
many years ago, after Paul Haigh had left the RP, we were talking about a well known broadcaster/commentator who ran a tipping line heavily promoted by RP (for argument sake let's call him Tommo) and he told me to ask myself this question, when these tipsters have to proof their tips in advance to the RP, why are they allowed to make outlandish claims about selections and PRICES when it's patently not true ?!

they are all in bed with each other and feed off one another !
Report The Management April 24, 2022 12:34 PM BST
At least Hugh and Tom seem like very good judges and they are a good read (imo) - but they are ultimately just making a paper profit on pretend prices. Just like any common garden after-timer of selections, you would still need a time travel machine (and a host of unrestricted accounts) to capitalise on their recommended prices.

Nobody likes a wannabe tipster that after-times selections, but after-timing prices for some reason still seems to be the acceptable face of tipstering. Yet after-timing a price is essentially the same lie as after-timing a selection.

It's should be revealing for the "Holy Grail" seekers that still think if only they could find a magic selection method they would have that secret winning formula - because it proves selections don't really matter (that much) and that price alone will be the factor that turns their usual loss into a profit. But Gaze will still be on later with a new Holy Grail! Laugh

Still did not answer my question as to why bet want to bet with these people rather than on here.  The days of getting what you liked on 10 hours before the off are long gone so why keep on about it?
Report The Management April 24, 2022 1:07 PM BST
I would bet with whoever is offering what I think is the "wrong" price sparrow - for as long as they would take my bets. Thanks to the internet, from the late 1990's until about 2006 that also included a whole host of new on-line bookmakers that would actually take a bet - before they morphed into what i would now describe as slot factories.

Ironically, the emergence of the internet (late 1990's) gave birth to a golden era of on-line value betting - before unfortunately (but inevitably) it went full circle (circa 2006 imo) and you had more chance of winning the lottery than securing an "advertised" price.

If you can get on - why wouldn't you take the best price? That is why I used to bet with them.

It's not really me banging on about it is it? - It's the people (above) pretending that you can still bet that way! I'm just pointing out the reality - that you can't!
Report Ramruma April 24, 2022 1:28 PM BST
@The Management -- Sirs Tom and Hugh are hardly after-timing prices if it is they who have triggered the crash. If Hugh did not post his selections but just had £5 on at his local betting shop, the price would be as claimed. And iirc Pricewise no longer claims the advertised prices anyway.

Of course, the price does crash and that, imo, is why Lara & Co keep banging on about it. I doubt they are real punters, just traders exploiting the price movement, and posting on here so that prices keep moving.
Report The Management April 24, 2022 1:36 PM BST
If you know the price is not going to be available to your readers/subscribers by the time you have communicated it to them - you are after-timing it (imo).

£5 is probably about right (in a shop) but Unibet don't have any shops! - Maybe they could just remove all the "bookmakers" that are a front for casino/slots games from the column and just compare the prices from firms that will take a bet? Oh, no, hang on, that wouldn't work! WhoopsBlushLaugh
Report The Management April 24, 2022 1:55 PM BST
It would work in Australia, where if you try to pretend you are a bookmaker, they have a regulator that says you have to actually take a bet!

But over here you can just pretend you are a bookmaker to "rope a dope" addicts into your slot/casino games. If you are advertising prices (printing them in your column) for the "rope a dope" merchants that you know won't take a bet at those prices, to my mind you are effectively just advertising for slot/casino operators - which of course is exactly what they are doing! You don't get a Knighthood for that imo!

Why can’t Sparrow grasp that people need Betfair and bookies accounts?

I know you haven’t bet anywhere but here since around 1970, but how do you expect people to place a simple football treble, or a lucky 15 on the horses?

I know you’re happy to back a horse to be placed every time you place a bet, but the vast majority of punters want to be able to place a multi bet of some description. Every time a thread of this ilk is started, you always respond with the old chestnut ‘why not bet on here’. Thats great if you want to place a single bet, or lay a horse/team, it doesn’t really work for any other bets people want to place.

I’m hardly stuck in the dark ages, Sparrow!

You seem to think that the Betfair Exchange is enough for every punter to be happy with, and you can’t get your head around why people would want bookie accounts. I find it staggering that you haven’t had a multi bet on the footy or horses in the last 20+ years, but that’s your call.

Just because people play differently to you, it doesn’t make it wrong. You are very likely in the minority for how you bet.

Obviously we don`t read all that tosh. We just add to the profits:

Published 9.15 - all selections online

The market in the 1m6f 3yo handicap at Wetherby (5.45) has focussed on three horses, which is understandable, as the race features two sons of Sea The Moon who dominated the finish at Chelmsford recently, and the stoutly-bred Mostly Cloudy, who caught the eye at Nottingham last time.

I think there’s a good chance all three are some way ahead of their respective marks, but at the prices I’m going to side with MOONLIT WARRIOR. He beat Satanic Moon in a steadily-run event over 1m5f at Chelmsford earlier this month, when both were making their handicap debut.

Satanic Moon ran the more eyecatching race of the pair, making up lots of ground from the rear to finish second, but winner Moonlit Warrior also left the impression he had much more to come, strong at the finish and challenging more towards the far side on a night where a significant cross wind meant that getting some shelter by racing more towards the stands side of the pack (as Satanic Moon did) might have been an advantage.

The 3lb and 1lb respective rises leave both still potentially very well handicapped. I’d have them at roughly similar odds for this race, so at this morning’s prices I’d prefer Moonlit Warrior.

Mostly Cloudy looked an obvious candidate for improvement stepped up in trip at Nottingham last time under a considerate ride and is another to consider in what might be a good race for the grade.

HUGH'S BEST BETS (1-5 POINTS):
5.45 WETHERBY
1pt win MOONLIT WARRIOR (7-2 & 100-30 general)

Larabrown - even post-op you have probably still got more balls than the fearless bookmaker that is known as Unibet.

You have got more chance of winning Miss World than being a winning punter that can bet with them. So something doesn't add-up - because you can be as "intelligent and creative" as you like - they still don't take racing bets unless you are a casino/slot playing mug.
