Desert Orchid (not dessert) - brilliant chaser of course but I can think of at least four rated above him since Arkle.
Frankel - Unbeaten in fourteen, beat Excelebration (multiple G1 winner) five times. Beat Cirrus Des Aigles (seven times G1 winner). Beat Farhh dual G1 winner) twice. And many other G1 winners, too many to mention.

not that many aussies or yanks in their insular greyhound track style flat racing worlds will have heard of Desert Orchid for example ......their loss.

Red Rum would win hands down. Tiger Roll amongst the younger people.

Yes, Red Rum is the most famous racehorse ever. Everyone has heard of him.

It would be hard to name 10 that the vast majority of people have heard of.

Red Rum and Shergar probably the only two.

Nobody's mentioned Flyingbolt. 2nd best chaser ever in any country ( flat horses are much more subject to geographical prejudice ). Probably wouldn't get in the top 20 most famous NH horses in the British Isles. Seems odd to say it but he was strangely lacking in charisma even in his own day.

Correct storm alert, you'd often hear "who's he think he is Nijinsky?" and of course Colin Bell's nickname.

Jump horses can be household names but seldom appear in pedigrees. Eclipse, Nearco, Ribot, Habitat, Northern Dancer and Sharpen Up have had a huge influence on the breed. Of horses that I have watched race, Mill Reef, Habitat, Nijinsky, Ardross and Frankel have all left strong memories.

Surely Dancing Brave worth a mention and as for NH what about One Man (once you accept he didn't stay Gold Cup trip).
