Don`t think any of us will blackrock.

Great shout ged, Ahonoora a very very good sprinter. Was it trained by Swift or Durr? Sure it was one of them.
Report verbotene liebe July 29, 2021 7:54 PM BST
About an hour back I looked at Ahonoora in the Timeform Annuals of 78 and 79, but as there is no posed portrait, it did not mention the owners so wasn't sure. He's always a good one for quizzes being an unusual Derby winning sire. Was under the care of both those trainers.

Did JELLABY - Not 'put his foot in a hole' - at Cagnes-Sur-Mur - aswell - in the days before All-Weather racing ... as in the Lockinge.

In fact - I remembered the Cagnes-Sur-Mur incident much more that the Lockinge ...

Loved Heavy ground .... or was that another similarly named horse (although I rather doubt it) ... will have to check it out.

Trained by W. Marshall possibly.

Mahmoud _ FROM THE !(£)S @HELD@ THE % F Record - But that was HAND-Timed - and it is generally accepted that the Man Timing the race was NOT in position and MISSED the Start - Thus pressing his Stopwatch LATE - AFTER the start.

RAFFINGORA - Carried 10 stone - ridden by Lester Piggott - got up on the line in a Photo ... beat Duty Sheet

Bill Marshall was a fighter pilot during WWII. He was a remarkable man. Trained a lot of decent 2-y-o`s for Van Der Ploeg in the 70s. I may be wrong but I think the colours were White, Green vertical stripe on body, Orange cap.

AHONOORA 1979 WILLIAM HILL SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP

Bloo dy marvellous!.  Thanks all, particularly The Might Mac for the terrific picture and workrider for his added tale.
The reason I remember it so well is this.  I was very young at the time and me and my mate, both from betting households, were allowed to get wee bets on.  We both bet Raffingora and were over the moon as you can imagine.  My mate kept repeating a jingle/chant he'd made as the horse was announced the winner - "Go on Raffingora"!  Then, all that afternoon he kept doing it, much to his mother's annoyance, and she could be a fierce woman!   Refusing to shut up eventually his mother went and got a hard rubber hose off of her washing machine and chased him about the house with it!  She eventually clipped him right across the back of the neck - unbelievably - and he never ever did it again!!!.  I've never forgotten it because, believe it or not, it was a happy house.  Even now when I;m watching the telly and one is going in I sing "Go on Raffingora"!  Absolutely true story.  The wife keeps asking who's Raffingora?  Fabulous memory for me - thanks all!

Courteous, dapper old John Rickman.  Remember him?  He would doff his hat and welcome us then proceed with his summary of the forthcoming action. The old grainy, racing pictures, and we were so delighted to have them, and he'd be there, giving us all the gen, with his own enthusiastic but very civilised style.  Happy days indeed.  A quick run down to the bookies, the breathtaking run back to see the race, and then usually beat!  Laugh
About that time I well remember my cheeky, cocky, oldest brother dancing in front of the telly to annoy my old man as he watched his horse.  He warned him and he did it again.  The old man got up peacefully, went and got the broom, sat down again and quietly  told him straight - "If you do it again you'll get this in the mouth" ( the handle end ).  Well poor bruv just didn't didn't believe him - that we would or COULD do it and did it again, opening and closing closing his mouth in mockery at the same time.  Pop!  The old man's aim was perfect!  Blood everywhere, my Ma going mental and us pissing ourselves.  NONE of us ever did it again!  Laugh
