At the end of the day, even if you don't buy into the whole team thing, its still competitive horse racing for decent prize money. Not sure why so many people have a problem with it?

Yeah, you'd like to think so for the prize money on offer. I'll certainly be watching and punting on the races if the right betting opportunity arises.

The cricket equivalent, The Hundred, does seem to be winning over the sceptics, at least for the action if not for the teams and gimmicky changes like 5-ball overs.

And that sounds a bit like the Shergar Cup. Ignore the competition and we have a great day's racing with a competitive card.

So maybe something like that will happen with The Racing League.
Report themightymac July 28, 2021 10:00 PM BST
It can`t be any worse than the Shergar Cup.

I've read that some of the smaller trainers weren't invited or sent a letter with details on how to sign up? I don't know the full facts of the matter. But maybe in future they could create another division for trainers with smaller strings and lower rated horses? The prize money would be half of Division 1 but the beauty of it, you could have a relegation/promotion thing going on with 3 teams going up from this Division 2 to replace the 3 in the bottom of Division 1. This would add a whole new competitive edge to the league IMO. There is definitely scope for something like this if this first season proves popular.
Report ItsMeSwaddle July 28, 2021 10:15 PM BST
Maybe this is covered elsewhere?

Are team tactics permitted?

Say for example something needs a strong pace over 7f, something on the same team sets of bullet train esque, ruining its chances in the process?

If every point counts does this mean the jocks will actually be riding their horses out for a place instead of pretending to.This opens up an exciting new form of wagering  for punters. It's called an each way bet!.It's probably advisable that the BHA watch these races they maybe able to spot the difference between a jockey imitating a statue in a finish and a one who's actually riding his mount
out for a place.

I understand the criticism leveled against this new competition and that it is not for everyone but I am happy to keep an open mind until we see if the "enthusiasm" for it from the professionals is real and maintained throughout the six week period, then and only then should it be judged and reviewed.

The reason smaller stables haven't got involved is that they wanted a maximum of four trainers per team. Since each team has to produce thirty horses capable of running in a 0-90 class of race, unless you can contribute five or six such horses, you don't fit in.

Report Angoose July 29, 2021 10:35 AM BST
In July 2021 for 6 weeks, 12 teams will go head to head every Thursday evening in 6 races each worth £50k in prize money and a total of 100 points.

Points will be awarded in each race  from 25 points to the winner down to 1 point for 10th place.

The team with the most points after 36 races wins the Racing League.

So that’s 6 weeks, 12 teams, 36 races, 3,600 points and over £2m in prize money up for grabs.

Each team consists of 2-4 trainers, 30 horses and 3 jockeys.

Team members, including jockeys, will wear team colours so you can instantly recognise their runner in every race.

I just put a line straight through any card that is made up entirely of Handicaps - even if they are Class 3 Handicaps.

The fact that it's starting out at Newcastle - a rancid course where the chances of a truly run race (in any race up to 1 mile) are miniscule - just makes it even more of a bookies benefit imo

This jamboree is costing Two million pounds which unless its fully sponsor funded will come out of the general prize money fund. It will leave even less cash for the class five and six races as the BHA will not want to reduce the prize money for the upper tier handicaps.
Report sparrow July 29, 2021 12:14 PM BST
That was my earlier point angrybryan regarding lower grade racing being excluded instead of ensuring they got at least a fair share of this extra prize money.

Horse racing is about the throughbred and they should be front and centre of the sport and not be dressed up in some gimmicky nonsense. Some of these trainers and jockeys actually seem to think that "punters" like handicaps and need contrived marketing rubbish to take an interest. We (along with Ireland) have the best racing in the world. The history and tradition of the sport and the variancies are what make it what it is. I resent this dumbed down nonsense which is short termism pure and simple. Stick to the core product and stop believing what the marketing men and bookmakers tell you what people want.
Less Racing
Better quality
Less handicaps
No marketing rubbish...the history and tradition is what makes it.

Well, it just wouldn't work with maiden & group races. Some people on here are the same ones who moan about small field group races. Now we have competitive races, still moaning. lol

Joe, you're right, Britain and Ireland has the best Horse Racing in the world but unfortunately some of the worst Prize Money, especially for middle of the road races. Anything to boost the prize money for these type of races is a good thing and hopefully in future they introduce another Division for 0-80 types and for those trainers/owners with smaller strings. Even with half prize money of 12.5K to winner, it would be a positive move. Also there are only 6 fixtures in this League so even if you're not a fan of the concept, its hardly worth getting your knickers in a twist over. It's still horse racing, they've not changed the rules!

I'm not moaning! - Each to their own, live and let live, everybody has their own preferences and/or specialisms.

Amongst other things, I like all weather racing and I loved the Fibresand - but I can understand anyone that doesn't appreciate it or like to bet on it. Live and let live - each to their own.

But I am never going to encourage, welcome or embrace a card (be it Flat, Jumps or All Weather) that consists entirely of handicaps - and I would never attend such a card. Then again, it's not aimed at people like me - it's aimed at this (mythical) audience that they think is out there if only they could find them and attract them!
