Just heard Ed C on ITV saying that it was 40 years ago. Ye Gods, where did the time go?

Me and my late Dad got up at some ungodly hour and did the 250 mile round trip to see the great horse duly deliver. I was a 'learner driver' at the time so did the non-motorway bits. Seem to recall the Queen was there and a few assorted recognisable politicians.

Anyone else go who might have better memories of the day?  Can't remember any other race on the card which is unusual for me. Got a programme somewhere which I will endeavour to dig out.

I was there Alun, first time I saw Shergar in the flesh as I'd been working overseas. I remember being rather unimpressed with his appearance and that short, choppy stride pattern he had, but it didn't stop him winning.

Just as important for me that day was the Brown Jack over 2M, as my then trainer, D Elsworth, had two runners. They both got beaten and then some total rag in the last completed a betting rout for me!

You beat me to it Onlooker. Kust been looking up the racing results for that day on the Times Digital Archive.

Headline report on the Monday afterwards : "Shergar wins but magic is missing".

they were saying today he only won  by 4 lgths,
but i seem to remember pundits of the day saying walter rode a shocker but got very lucky with a gap appearing on the inside on the home turn which he managed to make use of or it could have been a different story

Then Lydia Pearce won the race but that didn’t please the establishment so the horse was thrown out to this day one of the worst decisions I have ever seen.

Pat Eddery's Missus copped a Necklace, too.

Wasn't there for the Ascot race but was at Epsom when Shergar won the Derby.

What has lived with me for all the years since is how the cheering and clapping in the grandstand normally associated with the finish of the race was already tailing off as Shergar hit the line.

It was when he sauntered clear and then extended the margin to the second that the cheering began and then reached its height about half a furlong out.

The moment the horse went clear the race was over and the few seconds after that saw the crowd at its most excited. At the line it was almost as if the crowd started looking at one another to question whether they had really seen a horse make a mockery of his field in our premier flat race!

Great days.
