starting thursday till saturday,

a meeting to really look forward to , on the monday knowing oh great week of horse racing in store, starting on the tuesday till thursday the july meeting  , really did make you look forward to the middle of the week, but no race planners had to change it to thursday/ saturday, when we will  have 5 mins coverage of the best 6 furlong horses in europe, which no one will remember 2 mins after the race as theyll have to go to york for a big hcap, we recall the days of stradivarius, habibti, moorestyle, green desert, ajdal, but who knows present winners ?,  this really was a fabulous meeting for middle of the week , TOTALLY SPOILT imo

It's what happens when courses are run by bright young things with a degree in 'leisure management' from the University of South East Essex. Or as it used to be known, Southend Polytechnic.

The answer to every question is more marketing, more appeal to the younger generation - i.e more booze and don't mention the racing.

Thursday isn't July Stakes Day, it's Ladies Day. Friday isn't Falmouth Stakes Day, it's Gentlemans Day. And although they haven't quite gone so far as to apply the name, in reality, Saturday is Coach Party Day.

Completely agree with the original post. When it was a midweek meeting it had a certain something because it was run on 'working days'

I was a member at Newmarket from 1986 to 1992 and the July meeting was, to me, the halfway point in the turf season.

I can well recall one year when a winning horse was disqualified (I think it was a Sheik Mo. horse trained by Cumani but can't be sure). I left a bit early that day and was shocked to see a brand new Volvo in the official's car park with a huge stone sitting inside the smashed headlight!

Clearly, someone took the D/Q badly. But that was part of racing then - albeit a little extreme - when there was an air of raffishness instead of today's supposedly super clean environment where nobody says boo to a goose.

BHA nirvana

Chamberlin and the most recent winners of Love Island hosting a 4 hour Saturday bonanza featuring 1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, Grand National and a 5f sprint handicap from Sandown

viewing figures of 3 million and sell out crowds at all 4 meetings (Ladies Day at each of them) followed by a live telecast of Take That Reunion

meanwhile Perth, Cartmel, Hamilton, Hexham, Market Rasen, Plumpton, Fontwell, Newton Abbot continue their fight to improve prize money and serve their local communities

BHA could commission a survey amongst midweek racegoers asking how many of them have abandoned going racing at weekends or festivals because the racing itself is an afterthought to the media rights and massive (racketeering level) profits from the concessions

Gordon. I totally agree.

And when the euros end all the football fans will descend for an all day piss up in the sun. Shouting 'who r yu' to their drunken mate fifty yards away and spending the rest of the time backing francie Ryan Moore and favorites

Brilliant thread, the memories are flooding back. Like Jimnast can't back a winner at the place but still love it for the quality of the racing and am in full agreement that the mid/week meeting of old was correct and should never have been changed...

Soviet Star Lake Coniston and Oasis dream to add to the list, some great memories.

Report Movewiththetimes July 5, 2021 12:34 PM BST
I know Stravinsky broke the record but surely its been broken since then (1999)
Report Gordon63 July 5, 2021 12:46 PM BST
oasis dream?

i'd really like to know what BHA perceive to be the benefits to racing (on course attendance, customer satisfaction, media revenues, levy contribution etc) of tue-thu vs thu-sat for the July meeting?

I know from my local pub/betting shop that the July Cup has lost all sense of importance since it was switched to between (yet another!) sprint handicap from Chester and a 16 runner 1m2f handicap from York
Report Gordon63 July 5, 2021 12:48 PM BST

Probably his best was Indian King, who won the Cork and Orrery, Vernon Sprint Cup and the Diadem in 1982 as a 4-y-old. Rated 128 by Timeform that year.

One for the older brigade here.

I was at the July meeting the first time Aussie Jim Mcgrath did a racecourse commentary in the UK.

The winner skipped clear just over a furlong out and Mcgrath really added to the excitement by calling 'This bird has flown, all over now' or something very similar. Anyone else remember that - late 1980's?

It just felt so fresh and new to hear an expression like that compared to the reserved tones of our race-callers over preceding years.

Totally agree Elis. Used to go on the Thursday back in the 80s for July Cup day. Habibti/Moorstyle/Sharpo /Green Desert /Adjdal was there for all of them. Made a full day of it going to watch gallops in the morning on Warren Hill/Limekilns.
My 2 abiding memories following on foot Henrys(aboard his grey hack) string with Reference Point and Indian Skimmer identified by a local work watcher i was stood near.

and returning to the local high street cafe (think it might have been a WImpey Bar then) and whose sat there reading Sporting Life  none other than Cash Asmussen(Bluebird??) who was riding for Sangster/Obrien @ the time.and as you say cant even remember who won for a number of years .Just another race mixed in what is 1 of the busiest saturdays of the year has been 8 or 9 meetings in the past recently

Wouldnt dream of going on a saturday nowadays.

Agree in spades best midweek flat meeting of the season.
Went every year until the change usually great weather (midges some years though).
Wild racehorses would notget me to the Sat and the JC.
Why not run it on the Thurs where it would not be swamped by the other meetings being un on the Sat.
Mind you I know my views would be laughed at by the bean counters.

Totally agree about all being said about midweek races being moved to saturdays
used to look forward to Ebor day at york, the thing is when all us 'oldies' have gone these super saturdays will be the normal for the next generations coming through and it will be 'jobdone' by the BHA.
Report elisjohn July 7, 2021 11:46 AM BST
yes , but when us oldies have gone, im not sure horse racing will survive, these youngsters dont care a hoot about horse racing and betting etc etc, us oldies could introduce our sons/ daughters , nephews, friend to the delight of midwek horse racing , but i for one wouldnt even consider taking them to a saturday meeting not even a midweek ladies day these days
