I think with lads its £800 in a day but they will also have a total you hit in previous visits. They should have asked for photo ID or asked you to bring it in to prove who you are, depending on circumstances it will be followed by a proof of income.
They seem to be taking the lead in this because gambling commission and government have so far not set any limits.

The problem is slippy, they are now so paranoid about getting caught with money laundering or proceeds of crime money, with the huge fines involved, your average punter has now been caught up in the so called Red tape.

When they eventually do away with cash altogether we will all be fooked! - no anonymity, everything tracked and recorded.

The Tories are bound to do it at some point in the coming years - all sorted themselves out with tax dodging arrangements off-shore in Panama and the Cayman Islands - but they can't bare the thought of the man in the street saving himself enough from HMRC to buy a pint or two.

The cashless society will make it impossible to get a bet on anywhere.

Report Ramruma June 19, 2021 1:23 AM BST
That's the problem, @know all.

The books made so much money from FOBTs they could afford to get rid of horse punters. And MPs noticed a lot of FOBT players were doing their brains, pinching money from their employers, or laundering money.

Why exactly would anyone who wanted a serious bet use a betting shop? You have almost unlimited choice from online bookmakers with better and better offers and exchanges if you prefer them. I admit that I have not been into a shop for at least 4 years but I don't recall them having the sort of offers that are routinely available online.
Report parispike June 19, 2021 8:09 AM BST

Spot on The Management. It's not only the bookies. Went into a coffee shop the other day ordered a

capuccino. 'Sorry, we don't take cash, card only' followed by 'Have you signed in on your track and

trace app?'

'Do you have a track and trace app?'

'Please go to the table over there by the wall and fill out your name and phone number '

At which point I walked out. I've been to many coffee shops where none of this is necessary.

The only ones that are doing it are the large corporate owned : Coffee 1, Starbucks Nero etc.

All the ma and pa cafes take cash and no name etc required.

If you ask at the corporate places why they need this info they will say it is a requirement of law.

It isn't. The corporate sector is using covid as an excuse to go cashless.

The only way this process can be stopped is if, like me, everyone boycotts those businesses.

One think that these anti-cash establishments seem to have forgotten is tourism.  I virtually always pay in cash when abroad due to charges and the possibility of compromised cards.  I can't imagine that tourists coming to the UK would be any different, so no cash doesn't seem a sustainable policy.

Somerset County Cricket Club have permanently banned cash from the County Ground at Taunton "to keep everyone safe". I sent them this:

Thank you for informing members of your new cashless policy, and your intention to enforce it without exception.

I also have a policy, which is never to buy anything from retail premises which refuse to accept cash. I enforce this policy equally strictly, and as a consequence shall not be purchasing anything from the County Ground again. Not an ice cream, not a cider, no souvenirs or apparel from your shop - in fact none of the things I've been spending money on at the County Ground for years.

Your choice.

Their reply:

Good Afternoon Paul

Thank you for your email and feedback.

Kind Regards

Anyway, it's all academic, as they've also banned dogs "to maintain social distancing and keep everyone safe", so I can't attend anyway. They they only banned dogs after I'd paid for membership, of course.

I thought I'd just turn up for the morning session, and leave the dog at home, but as soon as I saw everyone queuing in masks and walking around in masks and even just standing up in masks, I just couldn't go through with it. (They only let you take your mask off if seated in your designated socially distanced seat, "to keep everyone safe".)

I want to go home (home being about 1990, just after Lawson abolished the on course betting tax and just before the digital world took over to ruin everything)

Gambling's future in a cashless society for those who hope to make it pay.

Online :-  5/1 horse   max bet 0.48p often less.(account restricted for all, with some of the new bookies restricting when you manage to make over £20 profit).

Shop   :-  5/1 horse   bet refused but S.P. offered (much worst than online as S.P. offered is the same as been banned)

Cashless betting = Only losers accepted and we know who is who from you data that you freely give us.

Betting aside, Sweden has a target to be a completely cashless society and there are many outlets in Linköping where you can't use any cash at all including at a couple of the major bars (been in place for a few years). It's the same at major cities Stockholm and Göteborg.

We have a system called Swish (contactless payment) but it's no use to tourists as you need a Svenska bank account and a national ID. It works fine, although UK debit cards serve just as well.

I can foresee UK will be the same in my lifetime and Covid will speed this up.

Indeed it does seem that we are heading towards a cash free society whether we like it or not and my mindset now accepts it. Even my local bakery won't accept cash. I did have an unfortunate experience yesterday though in Camberwell when a genuinely homeless guy asked me for some change to get a sarnie and I honestly did not have any dosh on me, I would have given the chap a fiver even but sadly it just doesn't occur to me now to carry any money!

Report The Management June 20, 2021 5:26 PM BST
And that attitude Slippy - is exactly why the "cashless society" is inevitable! You need to find another bakery!

If people proactively and vociferously boycotted businesses that refuse to take money - they would think twice - but apathy will win the day.

Had a conversation (pre-covid) trying to buy a computer - the retailer said he could not take cash! - I pointed out that he has a premises and did not have a website i.e. The ridiculousness of the situation that a shop that exists to sell things but you doesn't take money? And he still thought I was the strange one! Told him he had lost my business.
