Report Trusty June 4, 2021 12:58 PM BST
...but since 11AM it has been raining harder! Plus Cooper's watering. Who knows what the ground will actually be...what a C0CK UP.
Report A_T June 4, 2021 1:05 PM BST
there will be all sorts of fun and games this afternoon as jockeys try to find ground that isn't false
Report Howellsy June 4, 2021 1:14 PM BST
They had to water. Soft is better than firm for all sorts of reasons not least of which is animal welfare.
Report driver2 June 4, 2021 1:20 PM BST
and don't forget bookmakers' welfare Howellsy!
Report onlooker June 4, 2021 1:23 PM BST
"Soft" - is NOT - "better than firm" .... If your horse does NOT act on Soft ground, though....

Nothing WORSE - in that scenario.

Unseasonably SOFT ground - gives unseasonably False Results, too.

That is of NO use whatsoever - either in the present, or for the future.

Done - and done again - saxon

- and - if Epsom was on everyday - then they would get mowed everyday, too

Awful racecourse - I will not bet there No matter what the going.... Hate the unfair place

But for the Derby being run there ... The gaff would have become a Housing estate 50 years ago.

Report sixtwosix June 4, 2021 1:46 PM BST
I understand why Firm going is out of the question of the just these days .....no point in having grand horses like Mr Frisk and Direct Route ....... but why on earth have clerks become terrified of it for a five furlong sprint or 12 furlong Group 1 . Idiots the lot of them.

Report Trusty June 4, 2021 2:13 PM BST
SOFT say the jockeys. Andrew Cooper should be sacked. Good - Good to Firm even after the rain!!!!
Report wondersobright June 4, 2021 2:14 PM BST

Can't be expected to second guess the forecast which only mentioned rain in the last 24 hours.
Report differentdrum June 4, 2021 2:27 PM BST
The forecast earlier in the week suggested this might happen and then that was revised.

The ground had been changed to good on Racing TV well before ITV updated.

It doesn't look as if it is going to dry out today. Great news if you want a test of stamina tomorrow.
Report know all June 4, 2021 2:34 PM BST
never bet there apart from oaks and derby that canver from around 3 f out to the line is a big problem to some horses you cant see it on tv but its severe goes down from the stands side to the far side i could not belive how bad it was when i first saw it 20 years ago

Report johnnyrant June 4, 2021 2:41 PM BST
This rain has been forecast all week yet Cooper irrigates the track heavily. Makes a mockery of the sport & throws yet another curveball into calculations. Difficult track to bet in confidence even at the best of times.

Just unlucky is all. This wasn't forecast earlier in the week, random thunderstorms were 'possible'. This band of rain only came on to the radar yesterday and the met office predicted a couple of hours of it 2-5mm. Even if he didn't water, the ground would still have turned out like it is now bEcUz oF WeaThEr

Rain was 4cast for FRiday since last Sunday. Better put on another 5 ml tonight in case it is very sunny tomorrow morning.

My 2 in the derby have been backed  and should like the ground - Hurricane and Gear up, on at 16's tops on HL but mainly about 12's and Gu to a few pennies at 70's - if only there was a site that gave regular updates on all the conditions and I'd been reading it all week.......

Report Schraderbrau June 5, 2021 2:08 PM BST
the first 5 furlongs looked good, the last 5 looked soft. I'm ruling Mohaafeth out, no bet now. Save it for the firm ground in America.
