What other hobby would you pay £3.90 daily just to get the information for you to pursue that hobby.
It is obscene the price of our only form newspaper. You are basically paying over £100 per month to get the basic information to have a bet. It is ridiculous this newspaper is not subsidised by the bookmakers. Most other racing countries you get form papers for free. But British Racing has sold it's soul to the bookmakers, resulting in to much racing (5 or 6 meetings on a Monday, racing for £2k winners pot-ridiculous). Betfair and Bet365  put a miniscule amount of money back into racing compared to their ridiculous profits.
At the very least , everytime you have a £5 bet you should get a voucher to purchase the Racing Post for free.

we have all had our moans and gripes about this topic for ages now . its not new news but i will sort of repeat what ive said on it previously . all my favourite article writers are gone , i don't follow tipsters and i got fed up with falling for jockey/ trainer quotes that are at best distracting and at worst a proper ' put away ' . dispensed with the paper , all the form  info is on line from various sources free . my punting has improved quite noticeably .

I used to buy it four or five times a week going back quite a few years.

Think it is a bit over-priced now.

Just get it on Wednesdays now for the golf.Sad

I still get the rag every day. First thing I do is take out the section with the race meetings (not the foreign rubbish) out. I read the other stuff after I have formed my own views and made my selections. As said trainer and tipster comments can sway you and there is nothing worse than being 'run off' a winner. I also use 3 or 4 pages of the previous days paper to put the stove ashes in and the same again to re light it. Kevin Pullein and Richard burn well.

Seriously though, it is about the price of a decent pint and I do refer to it a fair bit whilst watching the races, so I get the most out of it. I do take your point about the price and every time it goes up a few more readers will drop off. That cannot go on much longer.

Most expensive toilet roll in history.
Report olddesperado May 15, 2021 8:39 AM BST
Bought it every day for about 15 years.

Gave it up mainly due to cost but also a general dumbing down of the paper and the sheer volume of racing nowadays was turning me off anyway.

haven't bought it for years, even when going racing which thankfully I am on Monday - CARLISLE here we come..that being said 2 comments 1) many on here need to update their databases, year on year the share of turnover from racing falls as sports betting takes over the globe 2) the explosion of sports betting in US has led to a similar explosion in online shows/podcasts etc with a level of analysis that put's anything over here to shame, the betfair podcast team have had a great week at york - kevin blake, tony calvin & dan barber, some of the oddschecker previews are interesting, I enjoy the lighthearted nature of the finishing line but i don't like the timeform efforts and as for the final furlong, emmet is up there with chapman in my turn off stakes...to summarise the print media has about another 5 years coverage of horse racing after which all the worthwhile content will be online and FREE i.e. not that rip off members club

----------------

"FREE" ... and just how do you think that they are going to fund that PHILANTHROPY?

Probably - Quite the OPPOSITE ...

I would think that - The current FREE portion of the site will be seriously REDUCED - probably to just Racecards ...

- otherwise - The whole Database will not be able to be supported - and maintained.
Report Gordon63 May 15, 2021 12:16 PM BST
onlooker - the sports betting companies in US (including Hills who believe it or not are leading the way which is why Caesars bought them) are making their OWN content and although it seems hard for us cynical Brits to believe that bettors would take notice of what the betting companies are tipping/advising, it's going down a storm - ESPN have introduced sports betting shows to go alongside their content, within 5 years BT Sports, Sky Sports, Amazon will be producing the same over here to accompany their content and I'd expect the same from RTV..of course ITV has shied away from betting content so they've got a dilemma but sportinglife.com, timeform, oddschecker and loads of smaller nice outlets are already replacing the racing post, the end is nigh

Gordon - You, obviously take a lot of note of what pundits have to say ...

I could never waste my valuable time listening to such podcasts etc - never have done, in decades of following the game, much preferring to make my own mind up from an Abstract, but FACTUAL,  Form Database - that does not proffer an opinion.

The day the Bookies and Broadcasters provide THEIR IDEA of what Racing enthusiasts and Punters both REQUIRE and NEED - will, as you say ... be - "THE END" Cry

There are, even now, many truly AWFUL - so-called 'FORM' - Databases out there - that include all sorts of unnecessary 'bells and whistles' (just because some NON-Racing IT nerd is able to write some code to output the additional tripe).

Even the RacingPost has some such features ... most notably - that entirely mis-representative, and consequently Useless, 'RTF' (Trainer 'Form') carp.

The Timeform site is terrible - entirely unsatisfactory and unusable for fast all-inclusive FORM STUDY... far from being user-friendly.

The day your vision becomes the only reality - will be the first day for decades that I will not be immersed in what might happen... and I will have to find something else to do ...

That reminds me - I meant to get around to decorating the spare bedroom ..... about 30 years ago.

Onlooker - before you grab the paint brushes have a quick read of this and some responses below

Gordon - You, obviously take a lot of note of what pundits have to say ..that depends on the pundit, I've been betting far more often and for larger stakes on NBA and NFL over past 18 months because surprise surprise the books haven't (yet!) restricted my selections, I tried a lucky 15 with pp yesterday, got 11p ew, same selections 2p ew with sportsbook and 83p ew with billys, it sucks the energy out of you when this goes on time after time, i can't get any bet on with laddies online, so multiple bets are almost out for me apart from 365 and bs..the pundits stateside are oftentimes enticing you to buy their packages but they offer a depth of free information that puts 'mark your card' or all those out of date info in RP into a cocked hat!!

I could never waste my valuable time listening to such podcasts etc - never have done, in decades of following the game, much preferring to make my own mind up from an Abstract, but FACTUAL,  Form Database - that does not proffer an opinion. i use the podcasts etc as supportive information, I very rarely back on their advice alone

The day your vision becomes the only reality - will be the first day for decades that I will not be immersed in what might happen... and I will have to find something else to do ...
it's not my vision, it's my view of the coming reality which is already a reality in the largest market in the sports betting world, 10 years ago I would have shared your view but as above the time and effort to pick out an overpriced selection only to go through 15 websites to get a ton on is soul destroying and the return on effort is simply not there as it once was, i'm 57 now and spending a few hours on a 16 runner 6f ascot handicap is less appealing by the year unfortunately

I went with online members package 2 years ago and at renewal last year I decided to see how long I could go before renewing and I still haven't. I haven't bought the paper for 3 years now. I may even throw some old ones away.

i buy it every day and have done for about 12 years .

i have tried the online version and lasted about 5 minutes before i got p!ssed off .

the print out version would possibly do the job but i haven't switched to that yet .

the only part i read is the "betting news" section on a wednesday ( or whenever ) , apart from that i skip through all the write ups about what the trainers say
Report differentdrum May 15, 2021 2:02 PM BST
I used to buy it out of habit, but gave up a long time ago. I haven't missed it at all.

You can get more than enough information for the price of running a computer.

Consequently, the price is ridiculous, and preys on an audience it perceives to be rich/and or gullible enough to pay the price.
