Probably due to watered ground. They’ve made the race sh!t compared to what it was and yet they’re still killing horses.

Sad for the Horse and the Race looks bloody awful at times, far to many runners for starters even 30 would be to many. And The National is my Fav Race but i find it hard to justify at times.

Chappers (or at least I believe it was he) who said on the morning show that it was very likely that a 7yr old would win the race now that fences had been modified.

...and then it gets floored on the run between fences.

I know it is not the National but Nicholls Houx Gris was also a fatality in the novice hurdle whilst running loose.

What is it that draws people to watch the National? It has to be in part, probably a large part, the perceived danger. If you start cutting the number of horses there isn't going to be that much danger left.

I still think forty Runners is to many and i mean lets face it The Race is nothing like it was 10 Years ago....Times are changing i am afraid.Plain

You sound like Bob Dylan there but you're right

So, the one in 2021 (The Long Mile), another in 2019 and then you have to go back to 2012 (see Wiki List of equine fatalities in the Grand National). Fence modifications and perhaps better horses competing have contributed to lower fatalities. Hopefully jockeys know when to pull up a horse. As already said the number of runners will also be a contributing factor. I assessed the field in the usual way in the morning but chose not to watch it live, nor have a bet, conflicted like Acey Deucy.
