I love going racing there even though my horses always seems to get stuffed at the half furlong and the rest of the field go sailing by.. Love walking around the Castle on a warm day after a service in All Saints which has the most amazing Vicar , a guy you could sit and listen to all day , he has a wealth of knowledge yet makes things simple for people like myself..Heading to the races in the afternoon , J.B Priestley and the novel The Good Companions were one of the first novels I ever read , I always felt close to the English having read it and would recommend it to anyone..I thought their was a statue erected to him in one of the shopping centres just outside Pontefract maybe I have that wrong, some kind formite might put me right...Really missing going racing in places like Pontefract..
Yeah i know the place worky, just on the edge of town....cant recall seeing a statue there though.Probably not something ya notice unless ya leant against it waiting on the Mrs

Lovely course, well looked after and great staff.Pontefract castle was where Richard ll was murdered in 1400 ,on the orders of Henry Vl allegedly by having a poker inserted into guts via his rectum. Ouch ! This was done so there were no marks on his body and therefore natural causes would be accepted as a reason for his death leaving Henry to succeed him. A good story but not accepted by every historian.

Day out starts with lunch in the Spoons Broken Bridge (geddit) then walk down the course stopping to pick up a pie from the butchers done the hill who usually is sold out as he doesn't seem to know when the races are on. Afterwards walk down the course to the Spoons Winter Seam AT xSCAPE then train back from Glasshoughton . Not until you've been there do you appreciate how stiff the track is from the bottom bend. Is a horse just gets 5f, it ain't going to be winning there.
