I seem to remember PTS offering free copies of Timeform annuals to anybody opening an account with them. Always seemed a bit odd to me, like a restaurant giving you a recipe book with your bill!

In those days I would have had accounts with lads, hills, coral and tote plus a local bookmaker. I then moved my account to Barry Slaney when he was one of the first to move to Gibraltar using a local telephone number and removed betting tax. He stood the local tax there which was about 2.5% I think. That would have been around 1990-98. Many of my racing pals, including some big punters, were convinced that it was illegal but it wasn't. I stayed with him until Betfair was launched but kept my on course accounts with the 4 big ones above.

Also kept the one announcing Red Rum's death and also the very first Sunday RP when there was a meeting at Doncaster I believe.

i have the red rum one madhatter ,almost every festival one throughout the 80s 90s and many more both life and post from important dates, plus a few sportsman, still enjoy reading old stories .

the edition i have been reading was about a pub landlord from fleet street who hated bookmakers and was changing his betting slips, hills took him to court ,richard hartley qc did the case ,even cricketer denis compton got dragged into it.southern operations manager for hills back then was john brown who of course later became the top man at william hill.

the fleet street landlord would have fitted in well on this forum.
Report jimnast March 5, 2021 8:51 AM GMT
birds nest will be part of a topic i will be bringing up on the forum soon, just a bit of fun like the last two nights giving people a chance to talk about horse racing instead of drones, covid and you know who.
Report blackbarn March 5, 2021 9:07 AM GMT
Jimnast - Re the story about the pub landlord, does it give the name of the pub?  In 1969, I worked just off Fleet Street and used to bet in the William Hill shop. Denis Compton was often in there. He used to drink, among other places in the Old Cheshire Cheese, and Elvino's (the journo's bar).
Report jimnast March 5, 2021 9:21 AM GMT
it does blackbarn i will be back in 3 shakes of a lambs tail.
Report jimnast March 5, 2021 9:26 AM GMT
as the landlord was 59 at the time i think i will be ok to post his name and the pub name.

his son might still be around he denied assaulting the shop manager by pulling his tie ,

which would be considered a right result today if an assault was having your tie pulled.

Jimnast do you remember a bookie called Hector McDonald not sure if he was just based in London , mate of mine was manager of his shop in Wood Green , I did boardman for him Derby day 1976 , I remember a former British Heavyweight boxer coming in to have a bet , he wanted to have £400 on a horse in a 2 horse race both closely match around the 10/11 mark . Pitman was riding one of them , as George was about to take the bet the race was off and and your man was still handing over the money when the announcement came , fallen at the first ex horse. I can still see the relief on the guys face as he regathered his money up ,and the look of despair on George's .

Workrider

Hector had many shops in London he also had cracking rails pics.

I saw him nearly 40 year ago at the royal meeting he was on pic 1 on the rails, in them days he had to stand himself on the pitch, unfortunately he wasn't in good health and they took him out in a wheelchair, gave me a lump in the throat.

Gary Wiltshire once worked for him in a shop think he stayed for a week Happy
Report jimnast March 5, 2021 10:34 AM GMT
i had gary on the phone last week ronnie he is in good form, drives to warwick each meeting just to see some racing from outside.

you mentioned habershaws advert well they did have one i bet you could guess part of it.
Report workrider March 5, 2021 10:36 AM GMT
Thanks Ronnie , I thought as much whenever I went racing in those days outside London I never could find one of his shops and often wondered then I'd forget to ask. I remember my mate deciding one night if he should stand a £10 treble a regular losing punter would have for the night time dogs , my mate was having money difficulties at the time , anyway in the heel of the hunt he decided against it. The next morning we read the results in the Life and his face turned a deadly white as all 3 of them won and the payout was £1,210 a massive amount in those days...
