Lets see how the French and Spanish exporters react if it goes on for more than a week. In any case, trailers can be shipped so long as they are not accompanied by a driver so how long will it take to adapt? English driver puts trailer on a ferry and returns to base with a French trailer and vice versa. Sorted. A headache for a few days but not a crisis other than in the media.

This has been predicted since the summer it's a perfect distraction where you can blame Brexit,Covid 19 and painic buyers.
The blame for the cost of food rising also fits this set up story.
People have had a long time to organise food stores.

Do we not grow food in this country, eat seasonal, eat British.

sageform, I'm pretty sure that ferries aren't set up for that kind of activity. Far more likely that they would use container ships and even more likely that protocols are quickly put in place that allow drivers to operate as normally as possible.

Agreed Dave. If it lasts beyond Xmas they will find other ways. Jjmbe, it is fine to advise buying British food in the future but everything takes time to produce. Beef 3 years, pork 10-11 months, potatoes 5 months starting in April, wheat 5 months etc. Too late now to provide any extra before the summer apart from a few greenhouse crops.

Panic buying is caused by online messages such as this. Please think, people are staggeringly suggestable at this time.
