Q and A’s regarding the competition format and rules.
How many selections must be made?
Over the month entrants must make 1 selection on at least 25 days.Anyone can join in at any time as long as this criteria can be met, so for the January comp, the 7th would be the latest possible time to join in.
The calculation for no shows which cannot be exceeded is Days Of The Month - 25 So for January 31-25 = 6 possible days when an entrant can refrain from offering a selection
Void runners will not be viewed in the same way.Whilst Substitutes can be offered along with the primary selection on any given day following all the usual rules, a failure to have offered up a substitute to replace a void runner will not be used as a strike in the same way as a No Show.So in theory for a month, an entrant may still be accepted for posting less than 25 selections so long as the no show limit is not exceeded.
Can I change my selection once it’s been posted.?
You can only change your selection IF it is either deemed void OR it is nonsensical, ie a horse that doesn’t exist given in error. If sub(s) have been offered they will be used instead. If no sub has been offered and the selection deemed void you can post another selection so long as it’s BEFORE the 15 min before first race time limit.
What criteria do selections need to satisfy?
*Selections AT TIME OF POSTING must be of odds no greater than 6.0 in any UK or IRE race under rules win or STANDARD place markets on Betfair. A rule change now determines that selections going off greater than the old 6.0 limit will now not be deemed void but instead will be settled at BFSP no matter what price this is and staking will be in accordance with the fixed 5% liability of bank as always.
Are win and place markets settled in the same way?
Win markets allow for a choice between an early price to be taken or BFSP, whereas place markets will ALWAYS be settled at BFSP. The reason for the difference being the sluggish liquidity difference between those markets and thus the credibility of early prices.
When must selections be posted? (please read this carefully)
A selections thread for the following days racing will usually be posted between 6-7pm, in the event I am not around at this time the selections thread may be put up sooner.Anyone who needs to post a selection sooner than the next days thread being active can message me and I will make sure their entry along with any substitutes is posted on that day’s selections thread.
The competition will have 2 phases for the selections process. Phase 1 will be from the time the selections thread is posted until 8am the following day (race day).
In this phase there is an opportunity primarily for those that are not around on race day to still be able to take part.Selections given during this time will be settled at BFSP unless a bet meeting the competition liability (current bank / 20) is posted on the selections thread to show it was feasible. The reason for this request at this stage is the volatility and slackness of the market and subsequent ?? over the credibility of an early price taken.
Eg the starting liability in the comp is £50 so a qualifying bet at the stated price must be posted for a minimum of that liability to be settled as such.
Selections posted with prices that aren’t verified in the above fashion will still be allowed but settled at BFSP.
Entrants are more than welcome to offer up to 2 substitutes to back up their primary entry in the event of that runner being deemed void.If 2 substitutes are offered they will replace the void selection in the order they are posted. In the unfortunate event the substitute(s) are also deemed void the entrant will be put down as a void selection day.
Eg 16:00 Haydock First Selection Sub 15:55 Catterick Second Selection Sub 13:20 Southwell Third Selection
Where 2 Subs are given they will be chosen in order posted rather than time of races.
Phase 2 will be from 8am until t-15mins of the FIRST RACE OF THE DAY (so if the first race of the day is 12:00 ALL ENTRIES FOR THE DAY must be in by no later than 11:45am.Any Entries past this time will not be allowed!
In this phase of the market, Entrants can take an early price (no posted bet required) as last price matched when posting or leave their selection to be settled at BFSP. Note again that place market selections will always be settled at BFSP at whatever phase of the markets.
How are selections staked and returns calculated?
Selections are staked to a fixed 5% liability of an entrant’s current bank with a 2% commission rate which recently has become widely available on Betfair.
Where a price has been taken this will be used in settlement even if the BFSP returns greater than the permitted 6.0 max limit. If deductions occur in the market after this price was taken, the taken price will be adjusted accordingly and so will the relevant staking for that selection to stay at the 5% liability of current bank.
Where a price has not been taken settlement will as in phase 1 of the market be at BFSP.
Where can the current standings be seen and who wins the comp?
The days results will be posted on the days selections thread on this forum, the overall standings will be over on the Your Comps forum. The winner will be the entrant with the biggest bank at the end of the month. We will also have an overall comp for the duration November through March this time around.
Anyone is free to join in on any given month so long as they can still fulfill the 25 selections minimum for the month. For a chance of winning the overall comp running November through March, the minimum selections offered must be at least 100.

I have decided to continue and see what happens. However, we all need to know what the table is, what is happening to the naps when the forum was unavailable to all, and what happens with this problem moving forward. It is clearly unfair to accept the picks during the last few days when some people couldn't take part. I await a firm and fair decision with interest. This is a good competition, i hope it can continue.

It looks to me like it's over fellas - it was very decent of Striding to keep it going after November under the circumstances - but it doesn't look like he is going to be administrating December.

Good points Celeric, who is going to keep the scores going as looks like SE has given up, not been seen since forum accessible again. Victoria's Peak- place market 3.28 Plumpton.

Its awful this forum, for a big place like Betfair not to be able to run a competent forum is ridiculous, esp when there's people out there running forums with a lot lot lot less resources
Stride can't access the forum still Its awful this forum, for a big place like Betfair not to be able to run a competent forum is ridiculous, esp when there's people out there running forums with a lot lot lot less resources
The Forum is 100% fixed (allegedly) Sont - not that I take anything assured to me by BF as a given!
Maybe Striding is not willing to click through the message that advises "your info will be shared" (or something to that effect).
Pretty sure anyone (that wants to) can now post - but there doesn't seem a lot of point in carrying on with this unless somebody is willing to administrate it.

I think Swad has the right idea (a knockout comp) - it makes more sense for the people that aren't doing so great to get knocked out - rather than this format - where they just get to slink away quietly by not bothering anymore - which is pretty rude and disrespectful to both the organiser and the other players imo.

Yeah a knock out format would be cool, that way any problems we can just wait it out and come back at a later date in say the quarter final stage, or a cut off say top 10 after the 10th of the month move into the 2nd stage, top 6 after the 20th of the month move into the final stage
Or something like that but better organised and ironed out I'm no runner of a comp

I think you have just done a very good job of ruling yourself out as organiser there Sont - if it were to go to a vote!
Seriously though - it must take a great deal of time and effort - so another big up to Striding. Top fella imo. Hope he is ok.

I really enjoy Stridings comp, I hope as someone said it is simply posting issues and we can carry on, its gave me new disciplined life to sit there and find a lay for the day.
No reason why they couldnt both run, mine would be a backing comp.

Does anyone know him in the "real world" - he seemed very friendly with a few - but I have no idea if that extended beyond this place?
I must admit - I had reservations about clicking through the message when opening the Forum (something about - your information will be shared with others?). Figured that's the whole point of a forum - so I clicked - but can appreciate it might put some off.

I'm not sure, I think someone said a while back he lives alone though, when the covid stuff was taking off he went missing then as well and we were worried about him. I'm sure it was him that did get ill around March-April and was a relief when he posted again.

Looks like the consensus so far From those who have posted is to let it drop until Stride returns
The tech knowhow and tables from SE are top notch and i don't think i could match it or even be bothered
He did go missing in the second month last time when covid started but ruled out illness So guessing the forum issues got to him Stroppy booger when wants to be Like most of us

Hey guys, I know I’m new to the this comp (only joined this month) after seeing how well it went in November. But I’m up for keeping it going and taking on the admin that Stirding was doing. I do my studying in the morning so should have the time maybe others don’t. I was maybe thinking of the main competition with same rules, format and maybe run a laying last man standing alongside the comp, so even if you get knocked out of the last man standing you still have the main comp. We could do a trial run for the rest of December and start proper in January. Obviously if Striding returns then great! Have a think, It’s just an offer for those that would like to continue as it seems a such a shame to just let it die.

Funkydj thats a fair offer I'm happy to if you get enough from others. The problem with last man standing comp, is that when you are out everyone loses interest and it is often a different lay from the main comp. for example you may wish to lay an evens fav to win more money but that doesn't mean you'd risk it in a last man standing comp. Either way, i would give it a go.

Funkydj - I agree with Celeric - if you're prepared to put in the time and effort - I'm pretty much always up for a laying comp.
I know there are loads of backing comps - but it's laying that appeals to me. I have no real interest in backing because (apart from filthy EW's) my approach to a race would rarely involve backing just one in a race.
Gaze - I am too humble and modest to tell you who won in November (and was leading the overall) - but you can find the results in the "Your Competitions" forum - towards the bottom left of this page. Although I think you would find it a bit too slow and steady for your taste!
