As I have previously stated Nico de Boineville has to be the worst so called top jockey riding currently he has no idea and his ride on Marie’s Rock can only be described as appaling,And Nicky Henderson’s hotpots getting beat out of sight regularly He seems to be only training for McManus and those have to be at good odds for this punter if they are at short price every trainer that trains for McManus seem to believe they cannot let them win

The level is so bad at Hendersons that Waley Cohen is probably the best jockey there. Repeat it again the same posters continually slaughtered Geraghty yet not a peep when De Boinville gives these rides(and there's been plenty to choose from -particularly shorties). Maybe that's because the same posters were adamant hecwas a 'top class' jockey and are now embarrassed by it.

Nico can't seem to get a horse to settle lately, been so many recently, he's best when out in front.
Report CustomCut November 28, 2020 4:52 PM GMT
Nico's statistical record is great, has ridden 492 career winners vs 449 expected at BSP, 1.1 A/E. The higher you go in the grades the better he gets, 98 winners vs 83 expected at class 3 (1.18 A/E), 44 vs 38 class 2 (1.15 A/E), 72 vs 60 class 1 (1.2 A/E), and in Grade 1 races he's 24 vs 18 (1.33 A/E). People criticise him because they don't think he looks good in the saddle but he gets results, and most of the criticism is biased. If a horse pulls its chance away under Russell people blame the horse, if it pulls its chance away under Nico they blame Nico.

"If a horse pulls its chance away under Russell people blame the horse, if it pulls its chance away under Nico they blame Nico"....I blame neither the jockey or the horse. Admittedly on occasions a horse can get carried away on the racecourse(boil over or be too fresh) and just not settle and pull too hard for it's own good and that comes as a surprise to connections, when how they have worked/behave at home is taken into consideration.
However, it is well known that there is a shortage of stable staff in general and I suspect an even bigger shortage of good quality riders who can ride any horse in the yard and can also effectively teach that horse from a young age how to be a racehorse. One of the skills being to teach a horse to settle properly and getting it's head in the right place. These riders including the jockeys can only ride 3/4 lots each day and that leaves a lot of horses to be ridden by "average" riders on a daily basis in both flat and jump yards. The issue is then magnified in yards with say over 80/100 horses.
One could argue then that it is not even the fault of the trainer for the reasons above, just the situation that they find themselves in when they look at the various riding strengths of their staff. Whether some of the flat trainers should be doing a better job at teaching their horses to go into the starting stalls more willingly, is another argument though.
Nico De Boinville is an excellent horseman and jockey imo but he nor the others are magicians!

Customcut, have you got this season's stats please, punting is all about present and future, IMO I think this year he's not riding as good as he was for whatever reason.
Report CustomCut November 29, 2020 11:53 AM GMT
The last few seasons he's basically been riding the same number of winners as expected, which is pretty standard for a jockey after they've made it to the top.
Report CustomCut November 29, 2020 11:54 AM GMT
63 winners vs 62 expected in 2020.

Doorman, you always get claimers with great A/E's, Kevin Brouder stands out with 68 winners vs 50 expected. Among jockeys with 0 claim few get above 1.1 A/E with a lot of winners, Sheehan (1.1) and Bass (1.1) are up there, Heskin (1.11), Mark Enright (1.15), and Fehily is 1.09 with 926 winners vs 848 expected, which is over twice as many winners than any of the others mentioned. De Boinville is 1.06 without his claim. One place where Fehily really stands out is in Grade 1s, 27 winners vs 20 expected and I'd rate him highest. Blackmore used to be the best on figures but has tapered off, not only in A/E but her strike rate has dipped slightly. Even without her claim she had 84 winners vs 66 expected in 2018, but since has been slightly below expectations.
Report doorman99 November 29, 2020 1:20 PM GMT
Pity Fehily retired, brilliant on those Nicholls saturday spare rides.
Report Davros November 29, 2020 1:50 PM GMT
Customcut's claiming jockey and Blackmore stats are interesting in that I'm a little surprised to the extent jockey choice appears to influence betting odds.  Taking Blackmore's progression - her A/E stat is good at first as a pro presumably because she's female, but as a result her achieving fame (ironically probably because she's female) her A/E gets worse as she becomes overbet.

All the time it's likely she has been improving from experience, as would any jockey reducing their claim, but in parallel recognition is bringing down the A/E stat.  So, therefore it probably isn't a correct use of the stat in a discussion of absolute jockey skill - it's simply a reflection of the market's reflection of jockey popularity.

What would be interesting is the A/E for a jockey two years before, the year before and the year being champion jockey.
Report Davros November 29, 2020 1:52 PM GMT
And / or, maybe Blackmore gets a lot more rides from top stables as she gets better and her A/E goes down because top stables get overbet as well as jockeys.
Report layemall November 29, 2020 2:03 PM GMT
and therefore the stats only paint part of the picture.....your own eyes does the rest for some.

Evening Nico what's the best horse you ridden Coneygree or shishkin?
Report sageform November 30, 2020 10:01 AM GMT
Maries Diamond was never going to win but Presentandcounting should have done. Henderson and his owners can have just about any jockey they want so why would they use a poor one? I admit they carried on with Geraghty for longer than was sensible but loyalty cuts both ways.
