I was fortunate to live through the great days of martin pipe - how that stable has fallen, many others with his record would have fallen by the wayside, living off the old mans genius - such a shame...on a different topic robbie dunne is just a lay machine, any owners putting him up deserve what they get

Its difficult to stay at the top for a long time as much depends on the owners. Even the great Sir Henry Cecil went through a long lean spell as a lot of his British owner /breeders started to die off and racing shifted to the Arab owners. Once he'd lost Sheik Mohammed then he was in real trouble. That aside I think David Pipe has done ok.
Report jimnast November 14, 2020 4:11 PM GMT
he has won the same number of grand national winners as paul nichols and more than nicky henderson.

Report GAZO November 21, 2020 8:20 AM GMT
i quite like main fact, his best run over hurdles was 2 1/2 miles on heavy going at uttoxeter when the further he went the better he looked so dont see problem with distance, although you never know until they have done it,you cant discount the jam man but who knows with that stable and the biggest danger for me would be third wind but i have a sneaky feeling his season is all about the pertemps at the festival and the race might not be as competitive as it looks as a fair few of the classier horses seem to be coming back from chasing which always makes me think are they having easy first run or looking for confidence booster,8-1 looks big and being from pipe stable who like a gamble can see him being a lot shorter race time,in fact if he was 8-1 race time that would be a worry

David Pipe is a very good trainer in his own right and to compare him with his father Martin, who had a remarkable career, is extremely unfair and I just don`t see the point of this thread.
Report themightymac November 21, 2020 11:45 PM GMT
..... and for the record, David Pipe was the first trainer to produce a century (134 to be exact) of winners on their debut season. And he trained a Grand National winner in only his second season, a feat which took Martin twenty years to achieve. Other big wins include the Hennessy Gold Cup, Paddy Power Gold Cup, Greatwood Hurdle, FOUR Midlands Grand Nationals, French Champion Hurdle, Ascot Stakes and Chester Cup on the level and many many more.

All trainers have slumps in form. David Pipe is easily in the top 20 of current jump trainers.

For Pipe stable watchers:

Good news & Bad news.

The good news is that Pipe's record at Uttox is very good with both Novices and Handicappers, especially with Tom Scu riding for him.

The bad news is they're both double figure prices (at the moment).   I have backed both (smallish) but would advise E/W.

Very respectable figures overall despite success rate dropping the past 4 seasons.

Majority of trainers will hit similar slumps in form compared to their most successful years.

To compare David with Martin, an exceptional trainer, is grossly unfair as his father had better horses and had over a thousand runners each season he was in business.

To suggest that he is making a living off his dad`s name is complete bollocks. Do you honestly think that all his owners would be giving him horses and paying high training fees if he wasn`t any good?

David Pipe is a good trainer in his own right and served his time with some of the top trainers in Turf history including Michael Dickinson, Cricquette Head-Maarek and Joey Ramsden.

Give him better horses and he`ll get the job done.
