Can’t believe the distance between the 2 posts. Looked to be nearly 1/2 furlong. Some mistake
Report hulk23 May 22, 2020 2:43 PM BST
even the suspend monkeys been taken in, the winners sitting there at 900/1 Laugh

jockey on last bright, actually did quite well to only get beaten a neck given he rode the finish about a furlong too early and stopped riding after he'd "won" ..

Although it is easy to blame riders, the course is also to blame. Why on earth do you need to have 2 finishing posts clearly visible at the end of a race? Sandown have been guilty of this on the hurdle and chase tracks for ever and it should surely be made compulsory for the unused finish to be covered so that there is no ambiguity for jockeys. There were several claiming and amateur jockeys riding in France yesterday so it was almost inevitable that it would happen.

Quite agree sageform the Sandown winning posts are ridiculous....can't be beyond man or beast to be able to dispense with one of them.
Report Wesdag May 23, 2020 12:50 PM BST
Yes, you would've thought just putting a black bin bag over the finishing post not being used would be a simple solution.
Report posy May 23, 2020 1:04 PM BST
Mind you even with just one winning post at Sandown I'd still call the wrong result in a close photo !
Report sageform May 23, 2020 1:40 PM BST
The justification at Sandown is that the horses are coming at a different angle from the last obstacle as the chase course diverges at the Pond fence. That means that the mirror for the camera has to be set at a different angle so never try to bet on a Sandown photo unless you are on the line. Wesdaq has the right idea but they might be able to afford a better cover than  a bin bag. So far as I could see, Vichy was only using one of theirs yesterday so the other one should have been removed. The only excuse will be the same as usual. "We have always done it this way" Blame an inexperienced jockey, not the racecourse.

There is also the point about the horses. In the 90's I owned a share in a horse called Jefferies who won 5 races but seemed to stop quickly after passing a winning post. One day at Sandown he was leading at the first post and despite desperate efforts by his jockey Norman Williamson, he stopped and was beaten a head at the second (hurdle) one.

At Vichy the winning post folds back when not in use. You can see it on the replays as it is folded back and visible directly to the camera rather than the riders for that race. For the other races the post is folded outwards so the jockeys pass underneath it and it is visible to them rather than the camera.
