Racing is an industry and a very important one at that.
Report thurnscoe thunder May 7, 2020 4:19 PM BST
If we are going the phase route and phase 1 begins Monday then 3 weeks takes us to phase 2 on 1st June, which still brings it in play for the market.
Got to be 50/50 it’s phase 2 or 3.
Probably more favouring 2 than 3 at the minute because they’d no doubt have football clubs back training by 1st June if that plan goes ahead,
On that sort of logic and the fact they could let them go 23rd or so I’d favour it should be slight odds in 1st June or before.

Ireland are confusing me, I get it’s been a bank holiday but what’s going off ?
Lobbying now for 4 full days if Saturday included as we were led to believe.
I understand we’re told nothing but to have trainers breaking rank saying they’ve been told nothing, I simply can’t believe the contempt the governing body has for its members.

Surely it doesn’t take 4 days to make a decision on it, or am I missing something, is it committees and more committees before Varadker makes a decision
Report thurnscoe thunder May 7, 2020 4:23 PM BST
Unless we have 3 more weeks of lockdown and then start out phases which would be horrendous on an industry level if it was phase 3 and they were 3 week cycles it would be in July sometime.

Report Tiger Tiger May 10, 2020 8:03 PM BST
There will be limited people in the ring to help give a foot up to the jockeys and no social distancing during the race, impossible to be otherwise. There are stringent rules about testing etc that will be in place in advance and a limit as to how many people can  be at the course who represent the horse, and other strict guidelines that have been agreed between the Government and the BHA. It works elsewhere and no reason why it shouldn't work here, imo of course.

Over here in Newmarket there’s no paired galloping up the Heath. Therefore how can a race honestly be ran without interfering that distancing ruling.

Stalls handlers are going to be required to break this rule also, or isolate from families.

As Boris says “You can play sports but only with people from your household” so looks likely that these race meets will all have to hole up together in a hotel? And then how does that play out in terms of hospitality?

People keep referring to other countries. We have a hugely different rate of death and a very stringent government on this way out of lockdown compared with anywhere else.
Report truehoncho May 10, 2020 9:00 PM BST

Step two of the government's three-part strategy cannot be introduced before June 1 and will include "permitting cultural and sporting events to take place behind closed doors for broadcast, while avoiding the risk of large-scale social contact".

BHA Press Release:

ISSUED ON BEHALF OF BRITISH HORSERACING’S EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Senior executives from British horseracing have welcomed the publication of a timeline for the potential resumption of sporting events by the UK government today.

In its document, Our Plan to Rebuild, the government said it planned for sporting and cultural events to resume behind closed doors as part of the second step of lifting the current restrictions.

This will take place from Monday 1st June at the earliest. Until this time, it says, restrictions currently in place around such events will continue.

This date is subject to an assessment by public health officials of the risks posed by the virus at that time and is conditional on the fulfilment of the government’s five tests for easing lockdown measures.

Racing’s Executive Committee, which includes the British Horseracing Authority, the Racecourse Association, The Racehorse Owners’ Association and the National Trainers Federation, committed to plan for resumption on June 1st.

They agreed that a timeline setting out what racing would need to do to meet that date will be published within the next seven days.

The Resumption of Racing Group will meet later this week and ensure that race planning and the provisional fixture programme, including the scheduling of the Classics and other flagship races, meet the new government timeline.

Racing has already drawn up plans for resumption based on minimising risk for participants through robust social distancing and strict infection control measures. Discussions with Public Health England and Chief Medical Officers from sports including horseracing will also continue.

This has involved the development of new processes and protocols, which will require significant adjustments to ‘normal’ race-day practices. The sport will be focusing its efforts during the remainder of May on finalising and agreeing these changes across the industry and supporting everyone to understand and adopt them.

The document also says that reopening venues that attract large crowds, such as sports stadia, ‘may only be fully possible significantly later depending on the reduction in numbers of infections’ but it gives no specific timeline.

The UK Government says it is working with the devolved administrations in Scotland and Wales to coordinate the easing of lockdown restrictions where possible. The BHA’s Public Affairs team continues to liaise with politicians and officials in Scotland and Wales to progress resumption at the earliest opportunity.
Report Tiger Tiger May 11, 2020 6:58 PM BST

Report kevinglass May 11, 2020 7:07 PM BST
its INCLUSIVE of 1st June.
Report Platinum May 11, 2020 7:19 PM BST
Hi kevinglass, I've lived in Italy for the best part of ten years so may be a bit behind the times where the UK is concerned but the way I was reading the situation is that the document released by the Government today covered just England, not the whole of the UK, maybe I'm wrong but thats the way it seemed to me. Therefore I was asking would it be possible for one of the devolved governments to ease their own restrictions and allow the BHA to stage racing in their country before the 1st of June.

There has to be a reason why the betting for racing to start in the UK before the end of May is currently 1.48 or so.
Report Platinum May 11, 2020 7:27 PM BST
Now I'm with you Laugh, sorry ignore my last post.
Report kevinglass May 11, 2020 7:46 PM BST
No worries. But since you are in Italy, you might have missed the fact that the devolved gov'ts will do anything to try and look different to Westminster.

Whatever Boris does, it plays right into their narrative to oppose it.

The SNP/Welsh Labour clearly are right when they say staying home is safest. It's also safest to stay home to avoid getting run over, being mugged etc etc.

Wales & Scotland will have to ease restrictions soon too, but they just want to be able to look more caring than Boris. So racing would be a long way down any list they have.

The give away is when Sturgeon/Drakeford, say things like "I don't want to play politics...….however"
Report duffy May 11, 2020 7:48 PM BST
Right then, they've been chomping at the bit with a press release every other day stating what they want to do if and when, well now they've got that date and plenty of time to get everything ready to go on June 1st, so go on, get it done.

p.s. let's hope the rate of infection doesn't go through the roof!!
