Instead of following all horse racing I have decided I will start to follow a certain type of racing. I'm thinking novice chases would be most profitable for me to follow. Does anyone specialise in certain races only? - how do you find this?

Yes.

I've no doubt there are people who show a profit betting on a wide range of racing and well done to them. But for me, specialisation is the only way.

^absolutely.

Although as far as novice chases are concerned I think these are a very poor choice.
Firstly more of these fall or blunder their chance away.

You can't rely on their hurdle form as a guide, because some are simply not as good over fences, but then you can't ignore their hurdle form either.
Good improvement can be expected when they get the hang of jumping, but as they go up in class the extra pace is likely to catch them out, especially at the major tracks where the fences are stiffer.

As far as serious betting is concerned I'd leave novice chases alone.

For years I only worked on 7f and 8f handicaps. Produced my own ratings and knew the form inside out. Had some really good years.

Dr Crippen's advice is, imo, well worth considering but if that is where your interest snd knowledge is already concentrated I suspect you'll do better there than following all racing.

Fwiw, I specialise in 2yo maiden and novice races which many would deride as equine roulette. But it works for me and switching my focus elsewhere would require another tough "apprenticeship".
