Going to the Chester May Festival and looking to book tickets but as I'm going with my father (in his late 70's), I want to find the enclosure which gives us best chance of getting a seat between races (or grabbing a table/chairs early and trying to hold on to it). Seems like the lack of seating around the course is a biggish issue for Chester (even more expensive enclosures don't necessarily have an abundance of seats). Does anyone know which enclosure I'm best trying to get seats (not bothered about paying extra but don't want my father to have to stand for most/all of the day)? Any advice from track locals on this would be appreciated.

Winning Post Enclosure - £80

Chester’s most premium ticketed enclosure is situated adjacent to the Winning Post -(*my add - on the INSIDE of the course - itself and within the heart of the buzzing paddock.
The Winning Post is the perfect spot to socialise and soak in all of the atmosphere a day's racing at Chester has to offer.
This adult only enclosure is partially covered with informal seating - (* my add - tables and chairs [b]mostly at  GROUND LEVEL ONLY and offers a degree of shelter from the elements.
Gents are requested to wear suits with collar and tie and for ladies, smart dress is suggested

Sit on the wall for free Wink May meeting is the least popular attendance wise of the season at Chester. A shadow of its former self. If they could bin it for 3 more Saturday meets they'd do it quick smart.

Cheers for info chaps, any specific recommendations on an enclosure? Don't think my old man would be too keen on the wall.

lumberg -

Given your stated circumstances - Then your only two options are as I posted above.

Cut & Paste the link I posted ....  http://www.chester-races.co.uk/racing/chester-cup-day

Activate the 'Drop-down Boxes' - and read for yourself - although it is just the same as I posted (above).

If you are unable to do that - then phone them up ...
Buy Call: 01244 304 610

You could have guaranteed seats, and table, if you book a Restaurant - But the prices are ridiculous.

Don't go in Tattersalls with your dad - You will hate it - Usually just  a boozy bun-fight.

Nobody can do any more for you.

the cheapo on course area is better than the tatts - avoid the tatts, avoid chester bet
Report verbotene liebe March 27, 2017 10:50 PM BST
County and Tatts been hijacked over the years mainly by the cult following wherever it's fashionable to go types and to a lesser extent by smarmy, suited gits or sinister wide boys types. Certainly not a gathering with any sort of reasonable representation by genuine racing fans. On Vase day last year I met up with an old pal and we went the cheapo in the course area. Not a weekend so no family picnics, a big screen to watch the action ( you'll need this in most places on the course anyway as the wigwams block the mythical unobstructed view unless you are high up in the stands, get to watch the Vase runners at the start and take some pics, a few pints , fish and chips (£6- no more than the normal going rate), a good cynical chat about the state of the sport in general and altogether a good day. If the weather is fine it'd be ideal for a pensioner, fold out chair or even sit on the grass. No stress or annoyances.

good morning lumberg

sadly chester is not for you the seating situation there is a disgrace in fact the only real chance of a seat is in the toilets, would it be possible for you to postpone your trip a week and go to york instead which is a much more racegoer friendly course in many ways.

good morning knot in wood

i am fine thanks for your concern hope things are well with you.

The best 3 days of the year.If you go to York get use to people telling you where you can and cant go!
Report Pinza March 28, 2017 11:42 AM BST
Take the car and park in middle of racecourse.
If you go to far left you will be near the final bend
Some races also start from there.
You will not be able to see the finish from there but will get the buzz and there is a large screen nearby.
Failing that go to The Architect pub where there are garden seats and just walk to racecourse wall to watch racing and no fee (apart from drinks).
The pub really empties out at start of racing but gets really packed before racing.

The best seat in the house for this meeting is your couch with the TV on.Absolute nightmare if it rains. Not that great if dry from a spekkies viewpoint.
Report verbotene liebe March 28, 2017 8:11 PM BST
I first went there on Summer Cup day in 1976 ( think Mr Bigmore and Mountain Rescue ran) and it seems that for all the money they've raked in down the years they have put very little back in to the course. Of the three notable developments only the underground tunnel from stand side to the paddock area has been voluntary. The racecourse stables had to be moved from off a side street in the town to the racecourse itself as the local council were concerned about health and safety issues. The members stand was rebuilt because a couple of juvenile delinquents burnt down the old stand around 1985.Admittedly it does have it's own uniqueness about it but it's attractions are exaggerated and somewhat cancelled out by the many downsides.
Report foxy March 29, 2017 9:01 AM BST
glad you enjoyed your day knot in wood hereford is a good town and deserves a successful racecourse, shame about the field sizes but its not alone with that problem this winter ,quite worrying really for national hunt racing.

i am struggling to think of a sporting event where the public are not told where you can and cant go.

Hi Lumberg,

I agree with what many have said on here. Perhaps so we can give you the best advice it would be helpful to know - Will you be driving to the course? Are you planning on drinking? Will you be suited and booted or casual?

People are right it certainly isn't the best course to find a seat but there are a few knocking about. Weather is critical too as many seats are out in the open and not viable for a day in the rain, the May meeting has been unlucky with weather recently!
