By:
hackney wick and walthamstow, didn't mind Harringay
probably ally pally on the horse racing front(although i was pretty young then) |
By:
The only time I went to Worcester it was a flat meeting.
Southwell used to be a very pretty little NH course. Haven't been since they put the beach down. Don't think I've ever been to a course that has closed. Had a trip planned to go to the last meetings at Folkestone and Hereford but my health wasn't up to it. |
By:
My dad used to take me to stockton, it was more or less on the door step.

YORK
only had two bets at the Ebor meeting, watching the jockeys come up the straight not knowing where to go - stands, middle, inside was a joke.Used to be the best track in the country now a bookies gaff track |
By:
Hereford was fine at a lower level. It might come back one day but I doubt it.
|
By:
Has to be Hereford where our beloved Now We Know won 3 from 3 and chucked Julian Pritchard into the ditch when attempting win number 4. Friendly track and a fair track, real shame.
|
By:
I used to like Stockton you may not believe it but they used to run a Classic trial there.
I had a right touch there one day over a horse named Sandras Secret. Happy days long gone |
By:
When I lived in Scotland I liked Lanark and in London the very different Ally Pally. I used to work in Wandsworth and it was a Hell of dash getting to Ally Pally for a Monday night meeting.
|
By:
I had a Scalextrix track that i still miss.
|
By:
Wye was paradise on earth.
|
By:
Good to hear from you, miprixabloater. I miss Alexandra Park.
|
By:
I'll put up three. Firstly the chase course at Haydock before they introduced the mobile fences. Secondly the old Grand National track before they made the fences less of a test, and thirdly, yes I too miss Hereford.
|
By:
For me it has to be two point courses.
Flagg Moor-Formerly home of The High Peak Point Robert Hill-Formerly home of The Dumfries Point. Mention of Stockton also reminds me of a horse I went there specifically to back.It was called Silver Teal,it had run at Sedgefield in its previous run & had been a blatant non tryer finishing 3rd or 4th.As I left Sedgefield that day I swore I would go & back it in its next run thus I ended up at Stockton. They set it away at Stockton & there was never a sweat. This must have been the early 70s. |
By:
Stockton was one of the most boring, uninspiring gaffs I have ever visited!
|
By:
Is Dunstall Park on the same site as the old course at Wolves ?
|
By:
Yes, half of it!
|
By:
Have to agree about Stockton. A most depressing place.
|
By:
I remember going to Stockton years ago used to get the train from Darlington to Thornaby, half an hour walk to the course then next door to Cleveland park dogs.
many times walking back along that long road to the station with empty pockets, now that was depressing. |
By:
My local course was Tweseldown and was a regular for many years until sadly it closed about 3 years or so ago.
|
By:
I remember my father taking me to Tweseldown in the 1950s. A real eye opener for a young East London boy!!
|
By:
Was Mark Johnson commentating? - Tweseldown is where he started.
No wonder they closed it down. |
By:
I don't think they had a commentator in the 50s and if they had it certainly wouldn't have been him.
|
By:
White City Greyhound track
|
By:
Phoenix Park. Lucky enough to see El Gran Senor win on his debut there.
|
By:
As for a favourite and if we allow greyhound tracks then it must be Clapton. Without doubt it had the classiest dogs based there in the 60s and it supplied the Derby winner 4 times between 1961 and 1966. The track closed in the 1970s.
|
By:
Stockton was potentially the best track in the North East ,depressing only because to one side of the course was old industry and run down railway ,the place is lot different now but alas the track is no more a depressing poorly designed
Retail park stands in its place . |
By:
Enjoyed Wolverhampton turf, both flat & jumps.....
fibresand was a licence to print money ! |

Looks like no one misses Hurst Park or Lewes.
|
By:
I miss Hurst Park. Across the Thames in a rowing boat from Hampton church. Was magic for a young lad.
I dont think they build many houses on it. Great shame as the place was packed after the war years. Winston Churchill's Colonist always seemed to be running. White City for the dogs was just as bad for me. |

1st pic is a young Pat Eddery at Stockton

23 Aug 15 12:27 YORK Used to be the best track in the country now a bookies gaff track Yes, so much better when they used to have the joggers path and you had to be on the rail |
By:
Folkestone - the only track in Kent gone!! What a waste - its still there unused.
|
By:
Bolton Dogs 1966 to 1990 the best flapping track ever , some real strong bookies
re trainer charlie lister was the best .. went ngr racing won about every major comp re champion dogs to run there open racing some of the best from Ireland andthe NGR |
By:
I used to go to Lewes and Hurst Park. They did build a lot of houses at Hurst Park. I used to go to Hurst Park by Trolley bus. In some races the runners went behind the stands. I even thought that I would like to live there by the winning post as we were house hunting at the time they were building in the 60's. Evidently as time went it became run down.

Folkestone loved it to bits disgraceful how the bha or who ever run uk racing allowed this to happen also Folkestone council have done nothing to help the situation, talk about a good time to bury bad news the announcement was made at lunch time on the day of the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics.
