I would say Towcester in England dont know the Irish tracks so well
Report MJK January 13, 2015 5:24 PM GMT
Can't see how Sligo is called a stiff track. Navan definitely up there with those that are.
Report racingstar January 13, 2015 5:29 PM GMT
Hexham,Towcester,Carlisle and Navan.

Take your pick with either of those two. Not for the faint hearted.

There's one in Northern Ireland and its like running up a mountain ,think its Downpatrick.Laugh

Surprised to see Sedgefield on this list.

The first time you go to Towcester it comes as a bit of shock to look down the hill from the stands.

Yet if you look down the other side out into the country it's the opposite, downhill all the way.
They make too much of the testing nature of the track imo. They come home just as legless on many flat tracks if they go off too fast especially in deep ground.
It's no more testing than many other undulating tracks.
And of course jockeys always tend to go that bit slower to ensure their mounts get the trip.

Carlisle imo Happy

Towcester always appears the hardest.

Exeter has similar layout but better class horses run at Exeter than at Towcester, so Towcester wins the title of stiffest in UK for me
Report zipper January 14, 2015 11:58 AM GMT
Towcester is about has stiff/ hard as I gets ,, bear in mind  the class of horses they get .. very tough on them
Report theres only one best tonic January 14, 2015 12:06 PM GMT
the trip back to the station at plumpton on monday took some getting in those conditions Laugh
Report Princesse D'Anjou January 14, 2015 12:11 PM GMT
Templemore p2p has the stiffest finish - last 75 yards is virtually vertical.
Report Dr Crippen January 14, 2015 12:17 PM GMT
Gordon63,
I can't see how the class of horse that runs at the track can have any bearing on the severity of the course.

If that were the case then why haven't you mentioned Cheltenham?
Report yorkie1 January 14, 2015 12:22 PM GMT
Towcester in England and Downpatrick across the water.....like a uphill greyhound circuit that oirish spot....
Report Wesdag January 14, 2015 1:01 PM GMT
Based on how horses finish, I would guess it would be Towcester.

They usually walk over the line there.
Report Gordon63 January 14, 2015 3:09 PM GMT
dr - I said below and this relates to class because they all seem legless at towcester whereas Cheltenham always has one or two romping up the hill since the drainage works in 80s

Towcester always appears the hardest.

Was an absolute gem of a thread, packed with scientific proof of how a racecourse could be uphill all the way round, but some people stubbornly refused to accept it
Report gentlemanjohn January 14, 2015 10:12 PM GMT
Was probably my fav thread of all time along with the over2.5 one on the football forum where someone asked how you could have half a goal in a bet and some complex and fantastic explanations followed
Report tillymay January 15, 2015 4:34 AM GMT
fact....stiffest flat course of all is the curragh
Report sidthekid January 15, 2015 12:13 PM GMT
Towcester,
Only for the Brave without Heart or Breathing problems,
There was a resident tractor in the "Car Field" just to get you out,
Remember see`ing jockeys on the deck just leaving the Weighing room going to the paddock in the 80`s it was so Sloppy,
Regular punters had Boots or Shoes with Platform shoes it was such a Bog in Winter,
Has it changed much?.
