You've had all this time to compose something witty and cutting to try and at least get one over on the great women when she dies. Must say your efforts have been very risible.. Couple of Elvis Costello quotes, half a dozen dancing weegies and the IRA saying they weren't a big fan... is that it?

The UK consumed 64.1 million tonnes of coal in 2012, including 54.9 million tonnes in power stations.

Coal imports to the UK were 44.8 million tonnes, a large increase (+37.7%) on the previous year's amount, mainly as a result of a dramatic increase in electricity generated from coal. Indigenous production was 9.9% less than the previous year at 16.8 million tonnes. (Over the year, 3.0 million tonnes was lifted from stock, compared to 0.8 million tonnes in 2011.)

I thought Maggie was right and Scargill was wrong. He took the miners out on strike without a ballot and they mindlessly followed him.

The massive difference between me and the Maggie bashers on here is that I don't hold it against Scargill and nor would I ever think or suggest dancing on his grave. He stood by his beliefs and fought for power over the country. Thankfully he was defeated but I don't hate him for it even though he never once apologised for screwing up the lives and livelihoods of so many of his followers and their communities.
Report Reged April 10, 2013 9:29 AM BST
Neil Kinnock, quoted in The Guardian: "The issue (was) the suicidal vanity of Arthur Scargill, which is why his leadership was such a gift to Margaret Thatcher. ... I don't re-write history at all when I say such was the domination and the exploitation of solidarity … that there is one person who stands accused of walking straight into the carefully laid trap of Margaret Thatcher with a high speed and lack of restraint that in her wildest dreams she could not have hoped for. ... The strike was ruined the minute it was politicised and in the mind of Arthur Scargill it was always a political struggle … He fed himself the political illusion that as long as the miners were united they had the right to destabilise and overthrow the democratically elected government."
Report brigust1 April 10, 2013 9:44 AM BST
This started long before Thatcher. Wilson couldn't do anything and neither could Callaghan. There was no way the path to ruin the unions had put this country on could be continued with. And there is no country in the world that demonstrates their values and ideas were right. That says everything so Maggie had the fight and defeat them for the sake of everyone else in the country not just the unions and their followers/members.

There are still families in the pit villages who hate each other where is their social conscience? And that is way before the effect their actions were having on everyone else in the country is taken into consideration. Hospitals blacked out, homes blacked out, businesses blacked, bodies not buried, rubbish mountains. ALL THE ACTIONS OF THE UNIONS AND THEIR MEMBERS IRRESPECTIVE OF WHAT EFFECT IT HAD ON THE REST OF THE COUNTRY. Where is their social coscience?

No, I merely sympathise with those who were flung out of work for no good reason, or otherwise battered by the fascist bitch. You do understand sympathy, don't you? Social conscience? Or is there no such thing as society?

I can sort of understand state subsidy of an energy source and to keep people in work ie society etc until it becomes completely uneconomical.

But as a taxpayer being then held to ransom, being asked for more or the lights go out I tend to lose my sympathy. Symbolic of the union led culture at the time - the workers were simply pawns and need to look at the political union leaders who led them off a cliff ( well actually they led them nowhere cos they made sure they looked after themselves.)

To listen you you brigust, and your fellow fascists, you'd think that TU members were some kind of fifth column or foreign enemy. In truth, trade unionists were and are the working people of this country, without whom you'd have very few rights today, and without whom you'd never have won wars. Thatcher called TUs "the enemy within", and yet all of the famous traitors have been public school and Cambridge boys. TU members are your countrymen, not your enemies, only Thatcher and her kind have convinced you differently. The same Thatcher who CONGRATULATED Pinochet on his government of Chile - Pinochet, our "friend" according to Thatcher, who like so many fascist dictators, led a military coup to usurp a democratically elected government, and then proceeded to murder anyone who was left of him. In the right time, Thatcher would no doubt have congratulated Mussolini, Franco and Hitler, and all of the other murdering fascist tyrants from the same mould.
Are you happy to think of Pinochet as your friend? How does it sit with you, knowing your heroine sucked up to fascist murderers?

In spite of the warmongering and jingoism, workers' struggles actually intensified during the Second World War. Tony Dabb reveals how rising class struggle saw workers form a different sort of unity against the profiteering of the bosses
Wartime quotas put pressure on miners

'Here we were, just about winning the war, and losing our trade union rights. So what the bloody hell had we been fighting for?'

With these words, one socialist summed up the bitterness and resentment felt by workers in Britain towards the end of the Second World War. The sacrifices they were asked to make in the 'national interest' increasingly entailed poor pay, intolerable conditions, and the infringement of their basic right to organise at work.

There was widespread determination to defeat Hitler's Nazis, but the war also created tensions which raised questions in the minds of many about its real purpose. It was apparent that bosses were reaping huge profits off the back of the war effort. For the rest of society, long hours, inadequate air raid provision and meagre rations were their only reward, and the future promised little improvement. As the war went on, ordinary working people became more and more unwilling to tolerate this unequal sacrifice, and they expressed their anger at it where they had the greatest means of making themselves heard--in the workplace.
............................................................................................................

Yeah, what a bunch of selfish bast@rds those trade unionists were, eh?

Thatcher's onslaught against workers' rights is one big reason why so many people today are trapped in £6.50 an hour jobs. Everybody can't be a banker/lawyer/accountant or whatever. Are you proud of that "achievement" brigust and co?
Report roobuck April 10, 2013 1:38 PM BST
Using the war as an example is laughable. Yes at that stage what the union movement stood for was absolutely fair and equitable.

But what it had turned into wasn't the same. It was politicised and in Thatcher's time we are in fact talking about 35 years later. Unions felt they could do and demand what they wanted. As a small example in the cargo shed at BA they had a set number of people who worked the night shift. It was a known 'perk' of the job that half the shift worked whilst the other half slept until they swapped midway through the shift. Guess what would have happened if management intervened? I believe it was fairly similar in the print industry as well.

So are you saying that should have been accepted?
Report breadnbutter April 10, 2013 1:39 PM BST
when labour were in charge in the early 70,s and the unions were calling the shots and holding everyone to ransom with power cuts and denial of council services why do you think the torys were voted in ?
the labour party itself  could not deal with the unions ffs .

All the stuff about the community charge being unfair is complete myth imo . the principle that those that access council services the most pay the most is a fair one rather than those that have the biggest house pay the most ,a single person in a big house would likely use less serviceS than a family of five in a council flat ....what was wrong with the communty charge ?

selling off the council houses was the best thing thatcher done along with a free market economy .

trying to blame thatcher for the state the country is in now is laughable.  and if its is a blame game look no further than Blair and co.

lack of investment in anything by successive governments is the problem we are where we are ,or do people honestly believe we should still all be burning coal for heating and in power stations ? OR we could have had a car manufacturing industry,ECT ECT  Laugh

plenty playing the blame game and rejoicing  after a 87 yearold women  has died of a stroke but not many offering any solutions for the future .  pretty sad and shows the mental state of many in this country .

I think you should just open your eyes Tip and try not to tell others to do what you cannot yourself. Anyone who believes Thatcher is responsible for all the ills of this country are living in a bubble. But, like the others, you only know how to talk rubbish and add no details. I do read the facts and I do know Thatcher wasn't always right but in taking on the unions at that time she was. You, in your blinkered view, cannot see that the unions at that time were wrong. And I was a union member ffs. The miners union, without a ballot I may add, had 2 choices think about the country or think about themselves. They chose themselves and lost. And now, like some of the sour punters on here, everyone else is wrong but themselves.

I've never bought the Daily Mail in my lfe but I did live through those times and my family, like many many others, were on the receiving of the damage the unions did to this country. They have no sympathy for the miners and, in reality, the NUM did far more damage to the unions cause than any government could ever have done. The difference is we aren't dancing on anyone's grave that only shows the mentality of some of the posters on here. And you Tip, are one of those.

brigust, don´t confuse me with some of the other people you´ve been talking to.

I have not once said that ALL Britain´s problems today were caused by Thatcher. You raised a comparison between the UK and Germany and I pointed out that the reason Germany is doing so well and the British economy is in dire straits is because of economic mismanagement by successive governments from 1979 to now. But it was Thatcher who first took the UK down the road of free market Milton Friedman economics, and which Major, Blair, Brown and Cameron have followed.

You were the one who claimed that the reason Germany is doing so well is because the were fortunate to have 17m workers coming from the east and as a result have had a low cost economy. I explained, with facts and figures, that this was laughable. YOU just ignored the fact you were completely wrong. So don´t accuse me of ´adding no details´ when you make such foolish assertions based purely on your opinion, and ignore the evidence when it suits you.

I was also a union member in 1979, in the public sector, and I accept absolutely that there were excesses by the unions. But the way to move forward, then and now, was to bring all parties round the table. The role of government is not, and should never be, to use the power of the state to destroy any group of workers and their communities because of ideology. The role of a PM is to unite the nation not the reverse.

And I have already said (if you read my posts) that it brought me no pleasure or sadness to hear about Thatcher´s death. Since 1990 she was a political irrelevance. I hated her when she was in power and if she had died 30 years ago I would have celebrated, but the passing of any 87-y-o geriatric does not make me happy.

I didn´t hear you complaining about all the right-wingers who were ´dancing on the grave ´of Hugo Chavez after he died, and he was a popular leader who never harmed one person in this country.

Why don´t you start offering up some ´details´, facts and figures to back up your opinions and anecdotes?

She made decisions that impacted on those with little or no choice they did not impact on her or her cronies she used the power and money of the state to defeat the miners she was no different from Scargill the use and abuse of power for their own ends, she gave no whit for the communities that she decimated ffs it,s peoples lives we are talking here, was she not elected to lead the whole of the country, she privatised the utilities with the blockbusting lie that competition would see prices kept at a minimum so she LIED to the country,it is indicative to me that those who supported her and glorify her will be to a man selfish and self seeking with no thought for others that is until there is a war then they all want the downtrodden to go and fight for freedom and a better life.

Totally agree with you tiptheodds,"power is a greater corrupter than money" this is very true,Thatcher/Scargill/Blair and all those before and since need a huge dose of humility they have an awsome amount of power ut is how you use it not one of them ever seem to use it for the long term benefit of all the country, down thro history placing this amount of power into one persons hands is tantamount to decimation for whole swathes of the populace it just goes on and on,this is why I can,t see our form of democracy ever solve the problems,Germany of the bigger nations seem to be the nearest to getting it right,of the smaller nations the Scandanavians seem to manage it well but we are far and away one of the worst of the developed countries.

Tip the report on Germany was not mine it was in a documentary on the television. West Germany were worried about the effect workers from the East would have on wages and were certain to drive them down. You don't have to be an economist or mathematician to work that one out. Your point about average wages I dealt with because these statistics spread over a country are completely meaningless. Ask the people in Wales what the average wage means to them. Any fool can come up with pointless statistics then make out they know something when in actual fact they know eff all.

If, as you say, you were a union member in the late 70's then you should know quite clearly the demands upin the government by the NUM et al were not realistic. You must have known the taxes pai and the rate of inflation. You must have known for a governmnt to surrender to these tactics would have been suicidal as it was for Wilson and Callaghan.

If you want to know some facts and figures you should read my posts. They were actually factual because I was working in a car factory around this period. So why don't you get your facts right before open your mouth? You, if you were a trade unionist at the time, should know better.

Really ? That must be the first time you've mentioned it.

No they weren't I thought we had established you were seeking to compare industrial workers wages to peasants such as yourself used to being ground down by your 'betters'.

The unions negotiated with Wilson, then Callaghan. They picketted the power stations, 3 day weeks, power cuts you should do some research. The unions wanted to ruin the country or run it on communist lines. And it's b ollo cks about driving down wages CC. You obviously were not working then. Otherwise you wouldn't be talking such cr ap. Before I went into the car factory everyone outside couldn't believe the money to be earned doing eff all. I worked here for 4 years. No business could survive that and it didn't neither did the mining industry or the print workers or the steel workers or the ship builders. Enough was enough.

If you ever start reading CC you will notice I said 'Before' I went into the car factory. You clown.
