That horse on the outside does have colours similar to Hallgate. Hippodrome racing ( Andy Geraghty) had a few in training which I'm sure was no earlier than 82 or 83. However, what makes me think this is the 70's is the colours worn by the crowd. When we got to 82,83,84, people were commonly wearing bright coloured clothes with those two tone jackets being popular.And as this is the Silver Ring in the background, with no dress code, there would have been some flashy colours to be seen if this was as late as 82,83+ My Saturday evenings are so exciting LOL

On further thought, I don't think it can be Hallgate as I can't see him being beaten that far in a late season race at Thirsk, as he was classy as a 2yo.
I still think it's those colours though, despite vl's Sat night astute social observations. |

Has Thirsk ever raced in Oct/Nov? Perhaps not. I guess late Sept then.
