Derek (Tommo) Paul Thompson (born 31 July 1950 in North Yorkshire) is a presenter and commentator of horse racing on Channel 4.
He attended Guisborough Grammar School and gave his first commentary - on a point-to-point meeting - at the age of 15, and his broadcasting career began at the age of 18 on local radio. In 1972 he was based in London working for BBC Radio Sport, for whom he covered a number of Grand Nationals alongside Peter Bromley, Michael Seth-Smith and Michael O'Hehir.
In 1981, he moved to ITV where he appeared on World of Sport and midweek racing coverage. In 1985, he joined as a presenter on the newly-formed Channel 4 Racing, a post he still holds today. He was also part of a team of three who helped to negotiate for the release of the kidnapped Derby winner Shergar. Thompson also commentates for At the Races and is a regular on talkSPORT radio. More recently he has been a regular contributor to the Betfair horseracing forum where he posts under the name of "Artie".

for all his commentating faults Tommo is a good egg - was at York yesterday for family day and he and Dale Gibbo worked non stop entertaining the crowd on course and were simply fantastic (they do it every year and are always great) - so many well wishers as well following his illness.
So go and cool off and leave tommo alone.

Actually - I see it the opposite way.
For all his, "they're not messing about," idioms -
Thompson actually IS one of the most accurate - and I much prefer his commentaries to the likes of over-excitable Lee McKenzie, and the Wannabee American.
However - as for Tommo being, "a good egg," ....
Well he should get an OSCAR for that - it's all an ACT - for those naive enough to 'buy it' ... and quite literally with his 'Tipping Line' scams and their downright untrute claims.
Tommo's afternoon exploits at yesterday's York 'Famiky Fun' Day - rather depends on how you perceive, "non stop entertaining."
Several hours of 'gushing insincerity'.
Some may describe that as purgatory.

Is Gerry Attric still alive, birkdale? I had great fun with him posting the "paid for" Tommo tips.
I've not heard from Gerry Attric for about 5 years. Last I knew was that he'd worked himself into a frenzy about Thompson's "tips" and had discovered where he lived in Ashley nr. Newmarket. He said he was going round to his house to confront him about it, but its all gone very quiet since then.

I'm still wearing a black armband for the loss of his daily Talksport efforts.
His bucket scam seems to be doing well, so plenty of people must still be losing money backing his tips.
