Price gone up for what I ask? Is there really anything that justifies it? Old news, poor layout, 4pages worth reading the rest is adverts & information readily available free online. You could argue they have the best tipster in the country but then that's a waist of time when Brucey & his cronies ruin the price before ink has touched paper. People should not & will not be ripped off anymore.

Suspect its online version will increasingly be developed and it is more and more, just like any other news outlet really. Also, nobody I know under 30 buys a newspaper.

While I'm here - has anybody ever calculated what Pricewise's figures are against SP, even Betfair SP. Just curious.

€2.80 over here in Eire in a country that's on it's knees. I noticed a lot of RP's left over last week i thought maybe they over ordered for last week. Nope talking to the owner this a.m he said 5 regulars had stopped buying it he said one of them said it would be cheaper for him getting a taxi to Spoils and having a couple of cups of coffee and biscuits and read their RP.
Report jumper March 19, 2012 11:08 AM GMT
Second that Anaglogs. I was amazed last week at how many RPs were still in the newsagents even late in the morning. I only get it Saturdays anyway and wouldn't be too troubled if I missed it either.

As I have posted on the Bruce Millington thread -

One of the/their major problems is that they are pricing the paper as if EVERY reader/customer is getting LONDON WAGES - like they are.

When, of course, that is far from being the scenario.

For Bruce to then proclaim ..... "£2-20 - I pay that for HALF a Lager" -

- serves only to rubs salt into the wound ... and display in spades what a cocooned world he lives in.

A statement of Gerald Ratner proportions.
-----------------------------------------

Ratner compounded this by going on to remark that some of their earrings were "cheaper than an M&S prawn sandwich" ..... (Note the similarity)
After the speech, the value of the Ratners' group plummeted by around £500 million, which very nearly resulted in the firm's collapse.
Ratner resigned in November 1992 and the group changed its name to Signet Group in September 1993.

Today, Ratner's speech is still famous in the corporate world as an example of the value of[b] branding and image over quality.]/b]
Such gaffes are now sometimes called "Doing a Ratner"[

they must make a few quid from the betting shop edition. would imagine every shop must get at least one. i remember bookmakers looking at touch screen race cards for shops, doing away with paper cards. it looked to be the way forward with regards to cost, suppose they realised it was worth more to have a racing paper on their side, spouting all sorts of propaganda in their favour.

price is irrelevant. if you are a wagon, then £2 shouldn't matter. its the standard of 'journalism' that gives me the pip. lee d1ckhead as a feature writer? Lawdelpus.

'renewals' are always 'cracking', and 'connections' 'bullish'. horse are backed from 'sixes' to 'threes'(but not 7/2s). and why is a nags cost now described in 'GBP'? what was ambiguous about £? did millie imagine we would confuse it with an egyptian pound? and i prefer to read GBP as great british public. the GBP of course, have given a resounding raspberry to millie and his helots. good for them. just wish i didnt have to buy the wretched thing.

Funny you should mention it OP as it occurred to me just last week that it was going the same way as the old Chronicle.  Stale.  Un-progressive.  Needing a shake up.
Still alright for free though, even though the clicking that needs done to overview/review what you want could be seriously reduced, particularly on the greyhound section.

Indispensable if you're actually at a racecourse, useless if you're not.
Report comingupthehill March 19, 2023 7:30 PM GMT
It’s a tricky dilemma,

We d be lost without it,someone has to collate all the info,it’s like the wisden of cricket.plus given the tracks broadband strangulation, you need a paper copy if going racing,if only for the colour s of jockeys.some will buy it for the dogs etc.
Most people employed or connected to the industry buy a copy,so there’s enough sales from that,to justify it.

They could increase advertising costs and make the bookies fund it at a loss, but even if it’s 2 quid, how many more would buy it,

Has it covers everything,it’s too big,but scared of not appealing to everyone, stud farms buy it for the breeding section etc,

Would it be viable to sell a condensed version,or is the printing costs not worth it,

Why don’t they offer a one day on line charge,24 hours,9pm till 9pm,

Why don’t they sub contract parts to other daily newspapers, like Betfair did with timeform.it’s crazy that national newspapers have a racing desk, when they could just print the posts info.jobs for the boys no don’t,no one wants to give up their seat on the gravy train.

The reason all this dosent happen is,everyone just ploughs on,keeping their head down, collecting their wages, plus the many vested interests making sure racing product is available.

They ve got to market the product, otherwise it’s an ever decreasing circle.

So it will stumble along, trying new ideas, podcasts, video etc,I’m sure they must review all this,so it is what it is,
I wouldn’t bet without members club, may as well play roulette instead.

The great mystery is the weekender results section,I d be amazed if more than 10 people in Britain collect this, what a total waste of paper and print,

Imagine studying form for a race, digging out relevant race from your old copies, would take forever.

strontium - "Indispensable if you're actually at a racecourse, useless if you're not"

At the racecourse, I use A4 colour prints of the on line racecard pages. Nerd!. I regard the online website as indispensible for me, largely for the ease of access to form history and pedigree info.

@comingupthehill

"Would it be viable to sell a condensed version,or is the printing costs not worth it,"

What would you take out to make it cheaper?  Removing the ads would have the opposite effect.  I guess a version without the racecards, form etc would save whatever rights payments they make for those, but then I don't imagine anyone would buy it.  You could cut the amount of editorial/journalism but people are already complaining that there is little of that in the full RP.
Report deeppockets March 20, 2023 4:27 PM GMT
