The old Victor Chandler for me Never refused me a bet, always gave me the price even when he rub the price was off his board. I can still hear him to this day calling out to his outside man CHARLIEEE. My last memory of him was sitting on the bench at Newbury just behind the paddock. Really nice person, dont think he was that old when he passed away.
I always found Freddie williams interesting to bet with , one minute he was giving me a bottle of water and saying " no problem son" then next race it was " ###k off , your`e on the machine " .

It was the time when a name sake had shot a policeman and he went on the run.
He would shout out Everyone is looking for Hector.
Anyone remember a bookie called Hector Roberts ?It was the time when a name sake had shot a policeman and he went on the run.He would shout out Everyone is looking for Hector.
Stephen Little, I bet with him more often than not and used to see him at the big coursing tournaments as well as the racetracks wearing that rather distinctive overcoat of his.

I am taking about the 60s so I think it would have been Charlie Maskey as he was a big man from what I remember.
Hard to explain but it was like watching a play
Victor would want something done and he would say CHARLIEE and up would pop CHARLIEE.
Never any fuss it was a joy in those days to go racing.
Think my Junior membership badge for the day at Newmarket was 25/-

JOCKEY WILSON always offers good win odds but also MASSIVE place TERMS, he often offers 1/8th the odds and once i even managed to get 1/9th the odds off him

Later on the firm became "Harry Metcalfe, you'll have your bet halved" imo.
Harry was always so polite and friendly, though. I used to ask for a thousand to eighty, even when I knew a five to forty would be enough for him, just to hear the civilized knockback.

john turner was and is a total gentleman down the west country, in particular he had the number one pitch at courses like salisbury, i very much hope he is still alive, and adrian, of sam harris fame, is a very decent guy around the southern tracks where he leads the ring or plays a leading role in the ring

"Wood Lane".........One day at Sandown,Benno showed me a photograph of three young men walking along the seafront at Brighton. It was probably the same one......it was one of his proudest possessions.

BARNIE;i hope your joking about the massive place terms with our friend jockey wilson, anyone who has an each way bet with that man needs to go back to school and redo their maths exam, its called exploitation of the masses.he is slowly killing the golden goose.

AD - I think its safe to assume he was joking. Good job we have the Gambling Commission now to protect the public from abusers LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.
Funny how their stated objectives include keeping gambling fair and open, yet the antics of the EW terms abusers (which they have allowed) is the exact opposite. I think that if any bookmaker is doing "non-standard" terms they should be forced to display a large sign (provided by the GC)to that effect explainng how their terms are worse than their colleagues.

Was not one of the reasons for making pitches saleable to bring fresh blood into the Ring, ones prepared to lay decent bets that the old guard would have refused ? How the worm has turned with operators like jocky and cjs turning people over big time.

Bill Sanders one of the old school, not like some of the clowns you see performing these days backing an even money favourite back for £20, 13-1, 3 losers in the book for £20 each....

seaside for sure Victor's offsider was Charlie Maskey, a good friend of mine who helped me get my first job in racing some 26 years ago, and whom I had the pleasure of entertaining out here in HK a couple of years ago. Complete gent.
I also forget to mention Mick Burton, the Hills man in the north who sadly died not so long ago, one of the nicest men you'd meet in any walk of life.

In fairness I must also add the old Fred Bins, if I remember right his joint was next door to V/C on nearly all the tracks in the south in the 60s and to tell you the truth I never had to go around looking for a price as between them you would ALWAYS get your bet on. I can tell you they were always fair and a real pleasure to go racing in those days.

Try My Best. Personally I have found the Pat Whelan guys to be quite cheerful. They also very rarely refuse a bet,and unlike most offer the "proper" each way terms even on 18 runner handicaps.

John Joyce, now that is a name from the past as i have said before on here in 1972 i opened an account with him; i was earning £10 a week at the time; i got his bills every Saturday as they were brought up to date end of business on a Thursday.
The first bill came and i was at work, when i phoned home at lunch time my mother said there was a letter there for you so i told her to open it; i was expecting a bill of about a fiver; my mother went ballistic as the account stated i had had three losing bets that week of £200 per bet so owing £600 in total, when i got home i rang the firm; at 203 York Road Hartlepool; explaining that these bets were not mine after a lengthy phone call they finally admitted it wasnt my bets but a wholesale butcher who had the same name, i used to see the guy at York and chuckle to myself remebering the episode.

Funny you should say that Ronnie. Many - and I mean many - years ago a good punter I used to know well frequented a local independent shop and engage the owner wanting to take a price a certain horse. When the deal was done the punter invariably produced a loud enforced cough which we all knew to mean 'no bees' !! Happy days.
