Unless I've missed it, there's no mention of Michael Watson.  Not saying the best pound for pound British ever, but a classy boxer in a golden era (Benn, Eubank, Collins) and certainly better than many mentioned on here.

I was just going to say that about Naz. Great handspeed but too flashy and once he met a world-class fighter who wasn`t on the way down he got hammered and retired. Plus unlike Graham he pocketed a hell of a lot and boy didn`t he flash it about. He was the most hated man in Sheffield for years.

Only just seen this thread after a few days off. Loving it. Some great names on here from my boyhood days of seeing the big fights a day late on 'Sportsnight With Coleman' and the like.

The Swadlincote farmer was Bodell right?  I remember when he was the next big thing after beating Bugner, but it all went wrong in an embarrassing hammring against McAlinden (???).

Capewine - if you're still around.... any idea whatever happened to very obscure Welsh contender Tony 'Oompah' Davies, who lasted exactly one round as I recall against John McCluskey in one of the latter's very rare 1970s flyweight title defences.

I dunno about best ever fighters but most memorable and bravest performance to me was a guy called Battling Laurel (English bloke did most of his work in  USA) who took on a real mean steward called Mugsy Long, who was a genuine world title contender.  English guy took the fight under duress and wasn't at all  prepared but he gave it his all.  Long was a very heavily backed (even, apparently, by Laurel's own management!) long odds on shot and the fight ought to have been a complete mismatch but against all the odds, and by adopting some questionable holding tactics, Laurel managed to take out Long with what can only be described as an iron fist. Amazing fight and amazing scenes.  I'm pretty sure it was pre-WW2.  Can anyone confirm this?

I think that people underestimate what Lloyd Honeyghan achieved, and the way he achieved it, the night he smashed up Don Curry, who was regarded as the pfp no.1 at the time, in what was a golden age of the game.

I couldn't say who was the best of all time among British fighters, having never seen Turpin, Wilde and all those old fighters, and it would be hard even to say who the best fighter of my lifetime has been, but Honeyghan put up the best performance, and by some way imo. He pummelled a great fighter into helpless submission.

Don't understand the couple of people who have slated Dave Green. No disgrace losing to Carlos Palomino, a great fighter, nor to the best of them all Sugar Ray Leonard. Was also a big fan of Eubank, shame how what he did to Watson affected him.

Ridiculous to have Watt anywhere near the top imo.
