Richard Dunn fought Ali in Berlin - it lasted five rounds, think Ali was holding Dunn up for four of 'em to give the crowd their money's worth.
Might be mistaken but no mention of Charlie Magri on this thread yet.

Disgrace that Naz has only been mentioned once in 5 pages. He might have been a bit of a n0b but he is easily one of the top ten British fighters of any era

Unless I've missed it, there's no mention of Michael Watson. Not saying the best pound for pound British ever, but a classy boxer in a golden era (Benn, Eubank, Collins) and certainly better than many mentioned on here.

Ref Herol "Bomber" Graham - I arranged a mortgage for him around 10 years ago.....without giving any secrets away I would say he was at that time living on a pittance having been ripped off by his Management Team and various promoters......shocking to see how some of these legends got ripped off by some scum Promoters...

I was just going to say that about Naz. Great handspeed but too flashy and once he met a world-class fighter who wasn`t on the way down he got hammered and retired. Plus unlike Graham he pocketed a hell of a lot and boy didn`t he flash it about. He was the most hated man in Sheffield for years.

Andres lived around the corner from me many years ago -Stamford hill- told me he couldnt see Tommys Hearns hands they were so fast.lol Poor old Kirkland lang used to sit on a bench in Sandringham Road Stoke Newington out of his nut and looked like a complete Vagrant, Lang would have been a great (no doubt) but he loved the Collyweed to much.

Only just seen this thread after a few days off. Loving it. Some great names on here from my boyhood days of seeing the big fights a day late on 'Sportsnight With Coleman' and the like.
The Swadlincote farmer was Bodell right? I remember when he was the next big thing after beating Bugner, but it all went wrong in an embarrassing hammring against McAlinden (???).
Capewine - if you're still around.... any idea whatever happened to very obscure Welsh contender Tony 'Oompah' Davies, who lasted exactly one round as I recall against John McCluskey in one of the latter's very rare 1970s flyweight title defences.
regards etc

Randolp turpin taking the title off Sugar Ray was like the Yanks beating us 1-0 at football. But for me, John Conteh up until he won the World Title was the best I ever saw.... didn't hang about if he had his opponent rattled, and finished the job quickly !

I thought the Benn Eubank fight was a cracker and was shocked when Eubank was judged the winner, on what I can remember the fight I am thinking of was the second time they met, to this day I consider Nigel Benn was the winner - Nigel gave it everything, what a great fight that was

Agreed inono,I am prejudiced because I hated Eubank with a passion whilst having a lot of respect for Benn.Eubank was a lisping clown who just brought out hateful thoughts every time he fought.
Like Naseem ham head and aga Khan,I just wanted to see their arrogant mugs flattened,oh dear.

_Scotboyass_ I had no time for Eubank or Naseem, they did themselves no favours with their arrogance, I will go as far as saying there must have been a majority wishing them to be beaten

Also did his sister work in the Rovers Return? Sorry for these questions if the answer is obvious but mad maxies madness has infected my laptop.

And in the real world max..........15 winners from the last 19 tips posted (16 if you include the place lay the other day) 102 winners from 119 tips posted and 249 consecutive days of profit provide for 4 fellow forumites. All proofed or posted on here.
Playing a guessing tipping game is fun but does not earn cash, however i do have multiple prizes from RUK and for fairness have only twice put up an info horse in the tipping game.
If you consider that arrogance fine.......but it is fact....and others benefit free of charge.hth

Yeah right max you want me to give up backing tips up to 45/1.........no odds on and 102 winners from 109 to follow your guesses?
Btw the method which does not rely on tips or guesses has made the lads in excess of £15,000 from a £200 bank since April if they have followed the rules.

Max is ok really inono,he just cant figure out how a molerat can be more successful than any other tipster in the world,it eats at him.
If he backed the tips instead of seething he would be financially sound, lets face we hate ewebanks but it wouldnt stop us backing his tips if they were winning.

I TAKE MY HAT OFF TO ANYONE WHO HAS HAD THE BALLS TO STEP INTO A BOXING RING,BUT THE GAME IS IN DECLINE DUE TO THE 5 OR SIX VERSIONS OF A WORLD CHAMPION AT ONE WEIGHT AND THE MEDIORACY OF SOME OF THOSE TITLE HOLDERS,THATS WHY CAGE FIGHTING(MMA)IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE POPULAR,NOT THAT LONG AGO IT WAS A SPORT DOMINATED BY FAILED BOXERS.

I dunno about best ever fighters but most memorable and bravest performance to me was a guy called Battling Laurel (English bloke did most of his work in USA) who took on a real mean steward called Mugsy Long, who was a genuine world title contender. English guy took the fight under duress and wasn't at all prepared but he gave it his all. Long was a very heavily backed (even, apparently, by Laurel's own management!) long odds on shot and the fight ought to have been a complete mismatch but against all the odds, and by adopting some questionable holding tactics, Laurel managed to take out Long with what can only be described as an iron fist. Amazing fight and amazing scenes. I'm pretty sure it was pre-WW2. Can anyone confirm this?

After spending a couple of days researching this subject i am in agreement with quite a few others that Jimmy Wilde must be the best British pound for pound boxer ever.

Just read this thread. Joe Bugner ? You are having a laugh !! As for going the distance twice with Ali - never tried a yard in case he walked into a punch. A total non-trier and a match for the purses of the participants but an insult to the paying public.

Thought the late Johnny Owen would have been worth a mention somewhere on the thread and bet the many Kirkland Laing fans on here remember both fights with Colin Jones , watching their 2nd fight you could be forgiven if you thought you were viewing a repeat of the first.
Well worth spending 2:41 secs reliving the second fight drama commentated on by the late Harry Carpenter...

I think that people underestimate what Lloyd Honeyghan achieved, and the way he achieved it, the night he smashed up Don Curry, who was regarded as the pfp no.1 at the time, in what was a golden age of the game.
I couldn't say who was the best of all time among British fighters, having never seen Turpin, Wilde and all those old fighters, and it would be hard even to say who the best fighter of my lifetime has been, but Honeyghan put up the best performance, and by some way imo. He pummelled a great fighter into helpless submission.
Don't understand the couple of people who have slated Dave Green. No disgrace losing to Carlos Palomino, a great fighter, nor to the best of them all Sugar Ray Leonard. Was also a big fan of Eubank, shame how what he did to Watson affected him.
Ridiculous to have Watt anywhere near the top imo.
