THE feature chase at Carlisle on Monday had to be halted midway through the race after Star Player was fatally injured and the remaining runners could not be diverted around the stricken horse with a circuit of the race remaining. Star Player broke down and collapsed after being pulled up after the third and, when it became clear that the remaining runners in the Cumberland Show 16th July Handicap Chase would be unable to bypass him, they were waved around fence 11 before the race was stopped and later declared void. As a result, all bets on the contest were also declared void, including those on Star Player and MoneyOrder, who unseated Richie McLernon at the first fence. Andrew Tulloch, clerk of the course at Carlisle, said: "The stewards stopped the race after a horse broke its leg and the field could not get around him." Denis O'Regan, jockey of fatally injured Star Player, added: "My horse broke his leg and there was no way past. There was no way of getting him off the course, it was really unfortunate." Brian Harding, who rode Royal Mackintosh, said: "I thought there was something up as they waved us round a fence, but they hadn't put the chevrons in." Adrian Sharpe, stipendiary steward, explained the chain of events that led to the race being void. He said: "There was a stricken horse on the down side of the course in the back straight and there was no way to bypass the horse so the ground staff, vet and clerk of the course were unanimous and the stop race procedure was initiated. "We are happy that the stop race procedure was followed correctly - the jockeys have been interviewed and they are happy that they knew the race was being stopped." |

Nevada Royale Newc 1-40 10/1
Very highly thought of by Paul Nicholls a couple of years back and won twice at odds on but suffered a few problems and sold on to Tim Pitt's yard. The ground today will be like the old Derby County's Baseball ground and will suit my fancy who won on very heavy for his last win.. |
