Sorry for the late response mate , busy US sports weekend and i've an NHL game starting in 15 mins.
Think your requests have more or less been covered , as for the BI achievements it's limited to the Embassy final ,Panama Cigar and some Gold Cup trials but add the fact that Francome stated he'd have won the Blue Riband by a minute but for being unshipped and taking the injuries into account ( he ran only 7 times in a 3 year period at one time in his career ) and it's still more potential we're talking about and what might have been but that said the evidence of mixing it with legends like SB and NN was there to see , that race at Haydock you mentioned I believe he was only around 9/4 the outsider of 3 so his chance was realistic before he tumbled. Accepting that Pendil was probably the best horse in my lifetime never to have won the Gold Cup then Border would be in the next bunch that followed , for me anyway. Richard Head had a reputation for nursing crocks back to the racecourse and more than demonstrated that ability with both Border Incident and Uncle Bing , the latter was peaking just before Border and his treatment of the Aintree fences was " Crisp like " but again injury prone with his best Blue Riband chance postponed by the weather with the race being eventually run in May and ironically won by Francome anyway on Fred Winter's Midnight court. As previously stated had the priviledge of meeting RH and what an absolute gent he was , all the above is from memory only so I stand to be corrected after all this time.
Brilliant thread mate and good luck with it

This thread reminded me I saw Cruising Altitude(beat Beech Road), Morely Street (beat Deep Sensation) and Bradbury Star (beat Chatham) all win on the same day at Cheltenham in Dec 89 and had a brief chat with Sir Peter O'Sullevan during his book signing for Calling The Horses.

A further sombre note to the subject of Coolnagora,; during the presentation I took a photo of Keiren Kelly standing at the paddock rail and shaking hands with a tall fity something bloke in the crowd who was wearing one of those hats that Magnier wears.Kelly was also on the winner of the Aintree race in which Coolnagorna was killed.

Hayden - Border Incident at 9/4 against two of the best chasers I've ever seen (at levels I'm assuming) means he was obviously very good indeed! PS - The Grey Bomber...anything to refresh the memory with? All I remember about him was being electrocuted. That's one that's slipped through the net in my memory banks. I can't remember anything he did on the course but in the back of my mind, something tells me he was unbeaten in about 5 races I think - can't remember whether he was 4 or 5 but I'm sure he was very young when he died

Delius would have been something special if it wasn't for the injuries. Came back aged 11 and was a very good horse despite missing the thick end of 4 seasons from memory. Second to Dessie in the RP chase and I think chased home Yahoo at Aintree when Dessie fell.

Artifice may have changed although I camn't recall. Peter Scudamore rode it a few times when the horse was at the veteran stage - could still go a bit though.

I remember Artifice beating News King over 2m at Newton Abott and then News King getting his revenge a month later over 2½ at Cheltenhsm in the Mackeson I guess. I remember that race because Artifice was miles clear but stopped after the last and News King made a huge amount of ground up promting Des Lynam to comment "Well that was an exiting race to watch.... unles of course you backed Artifice.". I had of course backed Artifice having previously backed News King at Newton Abott.

That was very much Artifice's style - try to get a long way in front and then (hopefully) hang on. Cheltenham over 2 1/2 was always touch and go for him

GG - Western Sunset was definitely Simon Sainsbury's and I was sure he owned Artifice too - I think my mind's playing tricks on me because I can find no evidence whatsoever that he was, nor that he was trained by Fred Rimell. I can't understand how I've got it so wrong

Yeah 626, 4th in 84, and p/u lame in 85, still remember my dad, having bet it, shouting at the tv screen when it wasn't out on the 2nd cicruit, commentator had missed it pulling up.

Just to clarify, Artifice was definitely owned by Barber and trained by Thorne. Thorne's other good horse, Beau Ranger went on to be trained by Martin Pipe later on his career.

I don't know how I've got this Artifice business all wrong. I can understand how I've got the Sainsbury colours confused with Barber's (both predominantly green) but Fred Rimell? Where's that come from? Can anyone remember a decent Rimell chaser/hurdler that ran in the same races as Artifice? I could be getting them mixed up. Who trained Western Rose and what colours did it have?

The mind does play tricks though.....these horses are from over 30 years ago when there was very little racing on TV - most of which I missed because I was at school!

Memory playing tricks - do remember when he went chasing he was on everybodys list for stardom but never got there. Similar with another Rimmel horse around the same era, Drusus

That's about five sets of silks (or woolly jumpers in those days) for Western Rose you've nominated between you Strangely enough, I can 'picture' WR sporting all of them! The mind really does play tricks

Some wonderful 16 -20 furlong horses of the early / mid 80's on this thread.
How about

sixtwosix Artifice lost the 82 Mackeson to Fifty Dollars More by a head . Wayward Lad who all but fell 2 out ,was 3rd giving them both a stone.
Ah, Fifty Dollars More was it, I am wondering if was 50$M that won at Newton Abott and not News King and my memory is playing tricks on me. Is there any resource on the internet to get these results/ The Racing Post site sort of fizzles out when you back into the 80's?

I suppose Valiramix has been mentioned? Set to hack up in the 2002 Champion Hurdle before tragically slipping up. Would surely have had many more big races in him.
Carobee trained by David Nicholson was a very promising young hurdler in 92 but was never seen again after his Aintree win.
And also from the same stable the Shirley Robins owned Mighty Mogul. Well fancied for the 92/93 Champion hurlde but went lame at the Cheltenham january meeting when odds on. Only beaten twice otherwise, once by Carobee and the other by a horse called Rocco trained by Jenny Pitman. In fact in that race at Towcester which was a novice hurlde race,it was Rocco beating Mighty Mogul with Carobee in 3rd. Probably the classiest first 3 home ever at a Towcester race?

BTW that Towcester race really shows how bare form is meaningless in this game. Rocco came from a promising 4th behind Travado and Royal Gait at Kempton to win at Towcester and only won two more minor races afterwards being beaten many times in between. The 2nd and 3rd went on to progress into top class horses. Even Alderbrook got stuffed out of sight on his first hurdle run by a bunch of donkeys.

Good thread with some good and bad memories... Jair du Cochet and Baydon Star stand out for me. I also remember a fabulous looking, impressive jumping Irish mare named Call Me Later who was sadly killed at Cheltenham in the '92 Sun Alliance, having won all three of her previous chases. Maybe not a superstar in the making and not for the top ten list, but a very nice horse nonetheless and it was a shame she was killed at eight.
Someone else mentioned Private Views, broke my heart when he was killed at Aintree though I feel his temperament would have stopped him ever being a real great.
Sometimes they never really come back from injury. I hope Noland does, otherwise we can add him to this list.

The horse who broke my heart the most was Gloria Victis......it took me a very long time to get over his death. After it happened, AP said if he'd had to choose a horse to go to war with it would have been Gloria Victis. Very sad that we never got to know how good he'd have been and even sadder that this lovely horse had his life so cruelly taken from him.
I was completely heartbroken too by the death of Valiramix. AP said at the time that, despite all his success, he'd never had a really high profile horse, such as Desert Orchid, associated with his name, he said Valiramix would have been his Desert Orchid.
I think Valiramix would have been everything we thought he'd be, and more.
RIP Gloria Victis and Valiramix

Harchi. The Grey Bomber was electrocuted in either January or February whilst still unbeaten and favourite for that years Triumph Hurdle possibly around 1982/1983 trained by Denys Smith at Bishop Auckland in County Durham.

red adair,i wrote about valiramix and gloria victus earlier but im with you fella, such a shame when they get killed like that with so much potential,i stated earlier that i think valiramix could(possibly) have won 3 champion hurdles.

Won a right few quid on Harris's MUNIR a few years back when he was winning some jumps at Southwell. Harris apparently said he'd win a Gold Cup in the next few years, but apparently the horse died. Gold Cup or not, I raised a few drink to the old hoss!
